Hi!
I have a friend who's ds3 is just a week old and she has been ebf him up until today when she has had a bit of a wobble and is considering stopping.
She tried to bf ds1 but stopped after a week Due to cracked nipples and didn't attempt to feed dd2 as felt so bad about dd1. This time round she was really really determined to do it and myself and other friends have been really trying to support her through it.
Sadly, she has began to have simillar nipple issues as she had with ds1 and the left nipple has become so bad that tonight she resorted to formula as couldn't stand to latch him on. Unfortunately the problem has been intensified because he seems to be a real little guzzler who wants both boobs at each feed. She has had a breast reduction in the past and Her left nipple is quite flat , which i feel is probably causing the latch to be poor and therefore the soreness.
I am still bf an 11 month old and my friend is bf a 5 month old so would like to think we know a little about the joys of bf but are now at a loss at what to suggest to help her. We have covered all the basics. Recommended all the creams, checked the positioning etc. Has anyone got any ideas what else she could try to reduce the soreness on the left nipple? If she feeds off just one will this cause a problem?
We don't want to come across like we are pressuring her into continuing but just know her very well and know she will regret giving up in the long run. Please Help mum's!!!!

The more air that can get to a cracked nipple, the better. She should go without a bra whenever she is (decently) able to.

No - she does not need air to the nipples, sorry!

This is old advice.

We now know there are better ways to heal.

Moist wound healing is the way to go - specialist product (eg Lansinoh) which covers the sore bit(s) and speeds healing - no scab forms, and healing takes place underneath.

Feeding one sided may be an option.

Best thing to do is for her to cal one of the bf helplines and let them discuss all the options with her.
