DD almost 2 & I want to stop bfeeding - will it be hell???

Dd 2 is 2 in a few weeks, I have exclusively bfeed throughout & had expected to stop before now (dd1 I stopped at 18 mths) but she loves it still & over the last 6 mths dd1 has been ill so it has been easier top continue bfeeding dd2. I still would happily continur bfeeding but dd2 has started biting me when I try to detatch her. If I didn't detatch her she would stay latched on permenantly. When I try she just clamps her teeth down & really bites down & stays biting down. I have had to force my finger between her teeth so I can get my nipple out. Have tried the stern "No" but she just thinks it is funny & it is happening at the end of every feed. So I have decided it has to stop. Problem is she normally Bfeeds to sleep & despite my trying toys, comforters, muslins smelling of me etc, no other comfort works, just me. Any advice or suggestions? I have bought her a llittle Hello Kitty mug to have milk in but she's not interested.

i feel your pain - i was in the same boat. my dd never really bit as a baby but as a toddler would clamp down as she drifted off to sleep. at the same kind of age i was ready to stop - i cut out the day feeds first - meant i could never sit down and needed lots more activities and distractions. (i'd already stopped feeding in public so she understood the idea of not having it all the time). that got us down to just a bedtime feed (had night weaned at 17 months though next time hope to do that sooner).

then i shortened the length of the bedtime feed so she wasn't feeding to sleep - can't remember what i told her but probably that the milk was gone. then lots of patting her back to go to sleep (what they do at nursery) or snuggling together in her bed. then once she got the hang of making the transition to sleep without feeding, i made the feed shorter and shorter before finally stopping. i think i warned her that because she was 2 the milk would go soon, or something like that. It wasn't hell at all - very gentle indeed and she didn't ask for it or miss it - but it was pretty slow - I'm sure i won't be so patient with no2!! hth

She won't stay latched forever. She may be going through a more clingy phase, and want you for comfort, but she won't still be doing it at e.g. 9 years old. So why not just let her come off when she's finished? If it's during the day you can feed her in a sling, and co-sleep at night. Then it doesn't matter how long she takes.

I wouldn't push her away when she obviously needs you.

babyphat - thank you - that gives me some hope! I don't want to stop in so many ways but can't cope with the biting. She doesn't feed out, it's only when tired or at home with me on our own. We have had a little cuddle on the sofa & she has fallen to sleep as I said there wasn't any milk at the moment (In so much discomfort from being bitten on both sides in the night there is no way I could manage feeding her just now!)
ihavequestions - Its the biting that is the problem, I'm happy to feed a bit longer just can't with the biting. She ends up in our bed or me in bed with her in the night at the moment. That isn't a problem if she can feed without hurting me!

Well she has stopped the biting - only after I repeatedly told her that she couldn't have any milk if she didn't let go when I asked her. She is asking for milk so frequently though, before she only ever did it at home, when she was tired. Now if we are at home she will keep wanting milk & if we are out and she's going tired she asks for some. I am still bfeeding her to sleep most of the time, I tried to stop but she got so upset, she seems to be needing the physical contact at the moment so will let her continue & try in a while.
