Tongue tie

Please can someone explain to me what Tongue tie is and how I would know if DS has it?

I've never heard of it before joining MN and just wondered what it was?

DS feeds ok, good in fact, but I don't seem able to fill him and he does bounce off quite often???

Tongue tie is when the frenulum (the bit that joins the tongue to the floor of the mouth) is tight and restricts the movement of the tongue.

Tongue ties vary enormously and some are very tricky to diagnose. If you google tongue ties, most information tends to talk about anterior tongue tie which is when the frenulum is towards the front of the tongue. These tend to be more obvious. The tongue often cannot be stuck out very far and the frenulum may pull the tongue into a heart shape.

Posterior tongue tie is when the frenulum is further back. The tongue may look completely normal, however, it's not how the tongue looks that matters, it's how it behaves.

There are many shades of grey when it comes to tongue tie which is why the medical profession don't seem to have a consistent approach. Many say not to divide the tongue tie unless it interferes with speech of feeding. But there are others who say that all tongue ties should be divided as there can be consequences from unresolved tongue ties.

good info here

Proceed with caution!!!!!
My daughter has / had a posterior TT and it was operated on last week under a GA and she has not fed since, 11 days of syringe and drip feeding, its been horrendous.
Her symptons were poor latch, incredibly windy, leaking breast milk when feeding, clicking noises whilst on the boob, falling asleep very quickly when fed as it takes a tt'd baby more effort to feed.
Good luck.
