Intermittent stabbing pain in right breast

I've been bf for 7 weeks now and all today I've had a sharp like pain in the inside of one of my breasts. It isn't constant, it comes and goes in bursts. The pain is niggling, rather than really painful, but I'm just wondering if this is the start of something nasty?
I've checked dd's mouth and it appears to be normal, so not sure if it could be thrush. Or maybe it is just a blocked duct or 'one of those things'?

Sounds a bit like thrush, it will look like flakey skin on you and in baby's mouth there will be white bits which can be gently rubbed off even a while after the last feed. Go and see GP for medicine, or if you don't think it is that you could try an NCT bf counsellor.

Hmm we don't have either of those symptoms (yet!). Maybe it is the latch or breast not draining properly. Will contact a bf counsellor if it is still there tomorrow.

Hope you get it sorted. Hate to say it but my ductal thrush started just like that - I never had any visible signs on my nipples and DS didn't show up til later.

Is the pain still there when you're not feeding? If so it is unlikely to be the latch. It could be a blocked duct, no experience on that one, but despite the lack of symptoms, my best bet is still thrush, especially considering the warm weather, perfect for baby yeast. If it is it will probably get worse, try letting some air to them and making sure they are dry after each feed. If it is thrush both you and baby will need medicine, it may also start to be uncomfortable for her too.

Thanks 3duracel and needs. She has been crying and struggling a bit on the breast this afternoon/evening - thought it was maybe just the heat.
The pain is when not feeding as well.
Would a doctor be able to diagnose thrush just on the basis of intermittent pain and nothing else? Should I try to get treatment asap or wait to see if it gets worse?

I'm not sure what threshold they have for prescribing, and of course it could be something else, but what you describe sounds like thrush, and of course they know exactly what to look for. IME it doesn't get better on its own, and if she already has it unless you are both treated it will pass back and forth. I would go in today and see whether they agree, describe your symptoms and her symptoms. If they don't give you anything and it gets worse then go back. I practically lived at GP when they were little, barely visit at all now. Thrush is miserable, wherever you get it!

Thrush doesn't generally happen on only one side. (It quickly gets spread to the other side, even if it only starts on one.)

Do you have a history of bad latch? Any chance there's a bleb on that side?

PiggyMad · 28/05/2012 08:52

It is definitely just on one side. I've not had a problem with the latch, but this side does get fuller than the other.
I don't know what a bleb is Blush

Last week I had some internal discomfort in one breast. It lasted for two days, one night I gave the sore area a good rub/massage and hand expressed making sure I focussed on the sore area and it stopped hurting. Might be worth a try? I wondered if I had the beginning of a blocked duct.

NotQuiteCockney is right if it is thrush it will spread, though you might not feel it yet. Best to go to GP to get it looked at, especially if whatever it is affects her too.

PiggyMad · 28/05/2012 12:37

Thanks ladies, pain has gone now but will ring the gp for advice and keep an eye out for pain in both breasts ad thrush symptoms.
