GREEN POO

indamb · 19/02/2006 21:12

ds is 16 weeks old tomorrow and has had dark green poo(like paste and stinks) since he was born, an occasional mustard colour ( maybe once a week).

he has suffered badly with wind, gp even said last week he is full of wind.

is this normal, i suffer with colitis and worried it could be the start of a bowel problem.

he has only been bottle fed, sma gold.

gp/health visitor dont seem worried.

dd 4 and cannot remember green poo with her

Twiga's DH here.

Baby poo is a wonderful selection of shades and colours and none of them mean much to worry about except dark purple or black which suggest blood in the stool.

The stinking bit I'm afraid is just the formula coming through - just wait 'til you try him on solids

Although colitis is unfortunately often familial to a degree, it is extremely unlikely to show itself for many years to come if your ds is going to suffer from it as you do. Windy babies are not a sign of bowel problems to come. Some people try different formulas to see if this improves the wind but unless weight gain is not sufficient there would be no medical reason to worry.

Hope this helps,
Twiga's DH

Which bottles are you using?

We used to use avent bottles and realised dd was very windy.
After a reccomendation we swapped to the Dr Brown bottles.
They are £10 for 2 bottles but they are well worth it.

If you look at the teets on them, the avent bottles have 3 quite large holes where as the Dr Browns are smaller and has a vent in it to reduce wind.
We found that dd took longer to finish a feed but that was a good thing in the end.

My baby had, until recently, terible colic too. After she'd had a particularly bad go at the colic she'd have green poo usually with stringy mucus as well - I wondered if it was a cause or a reaction?

i started with avent bottles and moved to dr browns.

to be honest dont think much of them, (must be the only person in the world) he seems to gulp more with them. just switched back to avent.

thanks twiga dh for all your advice, i guess i am just being a mum and worrying too much.
