Weaning and water

My DTs are just 6 months and I've started weaning, a mixture of mush and BLW. So far its going well with DTS (DTD is reluctant but that's a different story!) and he's had a variety of fruits, vegs and some porridge and a few bits off my plate like bread etc. I have been trying to get them to drink some water as I seem to recall being told this is important to prevent constipation, but this is proving difficult/impossible. Does anyone have any great tips to help?

They are mix fed, bf about 3/4 times a day and 3 bottles of formula

Thanks in advance

It's not terribly important that they have lots of water (in fact lots of straight water isn't great for babies) unless they have a completely dry diet (e.g. bread, breadsticks, crackers, dry weetabix, biscuits only) as most foods have a fair amount of water especially fruit and vegetables.

Sips of water are fine as long as they are still having milk - don't forget BM is approx 88% water and I suspect formula is a similar proportion (after all you have 6oz of water to 6 scoops of powder so there's still 6oz of water in it).

yes what truthsweet said just offer them a sippy cup of water at each meal the tommee tippee ones are cheap and do the job :) they dont need to drink loads but they will drink if they are thirsty.

IF they do get constipated, which can happen as the tummy gets used to new things, then i used to mix some pureed prunes in with some yogurt and taht always did the trick i would simmer the prunes a bit and then whizz with a blender, i just bought the tined ones in prune juice (check and remove stones) and then i woudl freeze them in an ice cube tray and just pop one ice cube in with some yog ( idefrosted it by leaving it in the fridge or a quick 10 second zap in the mircrowave) :)
