4 month old twin wants to bf every 2 and a half hours

Any suggestions as to what I can do to make my milk satisfy her for longer? Anything I could be eating more/ less of etc. Her weight is fine but it would be nice to be going longer rather than shorter between feeds! Thanks in advance! X

Sounds normal to me, most bf babies seem to go 2-3 hours between feeds.

Inspirachion · 16/05/2012 22:53

I was taught that exclusive bf replaces meals and drinks. Therefore i would not be surprised if baby needs more frequent feeds.I rarely go more than a couple of hours without a drink Wink
Someone who knows more will be along soon I guess . . .

Sounds pretty normal to me too. My dts were going about the same at thats age, sometimes less if they were having a growth spurt. It's knackering but will get easier - hold on in there.

LargeGlassofRed · 16/05/2012 22:58

Mine used to feed that often, but only for about 5 to 10 mins or so,
They started going longer after 6 months when they went on solids.

Your milk is fine Smile

You could perhaps try feeding her even more often in the day, to see if she then might go a little longer at night, but it doesn't work for all babies, and every 2 1/2 hours might just suit her.

Janberry, this is on the normal spectrum - even if she has gone longer before. Nothing you can eat/not eat will make the slightest difference to the 'satisfying' quotient of your milk...really, not a thing. It's easiest to try and change what you do, to accommodate/work round this normal feeding frequency, than to try to change the normal needs of a young baby....are there changes you can make to make things a bit easier for you?

DS was still feeding this often (plus 3 big meals and at least 3 big snacks a day) at about 18 months. Not all children keep going at that rate, but it's perfectly normal.

I have something to either eat or drink at about hourly intervals during the day, so I don't think it's surprising. Now at 2.4 years DS wouldn't go more than 2 hours without food or drink.

My DD who is 5.5 months has only just started stretching out feeds. It was because she got very distracted so didnt feed much in the day (her nappies at night were very heavy). Now she's a bit older she can go longer and eats more as her day nappies are now fuller.

I carry her in a sling a lot (appreciate this isn't possible for you with twins) so she can wait a bit (up to 20 mins), eg if I'm walking home.

I also feed her in the sling which makes life easier too.

As others have said, it's not your milk. Some babies like to eat frequently, some can go a bit longer.

My DS is almost 6 months old and he feeds every 2.5 hours, although if we're out he'll go longer. I think it's just the way it is, sorry!

Janberry, what do you think?

DW123 · 18/05/2012 23:37

My DTs fed every 2 hours which does make going out really tricky but it gets lots easier when the feeds get shorter, as you can feed them whilst the other is waiting without a meltdown, and its not such a palaver if you are at a babygroup etc. Hope you find it easier soon. Well done for bfing twins.
