Can it be reflux if he's happy on his back most of the time?

I'm totally flumoxed by 14wk DS2. DS1 had reflux, not badly, controlled with inf gaviscon and gone by 6mo.

He's hiccuppy, windy (both ends), goes through phases of bobbing on and off the boob during feeds (but seems more distracted than uncomfortable). He blows spitty bubbles. He does sometime cry and arch his back when I first put him to the boob, and occasionally after, like he's anticipating pain?

He took ages to learn how to latch and bfing was a nightmare til about 3wks. Latch could still be a bit crap. I have had problems with lots of milk but I think this is better now, certainly they are not feeling as full as before.

Sometimes I hear him gulping. He possets a little bit with burps. About 3 x a week he vomits clear fluid several hours after a feed - no pain with this. He doesn't have acidy breath but sometimes the sick smells acidy.

He's generally cheerful but has the odd 'day'

His sleep is ALL OVER THE PLACE. He can go for 5-6 stretches at night sometimes, then we get the joys of last night's up-every-hour fun. Naps are a problem with 30-45min the norm.

He sometimes whinges but become very happy and smiley when I pop him down on the floor/rug/playmat. Flat on his back. Shouldn't this be painful if he has reflux?

So confused.

And if you've bothered to read this far - thank you!! Any ideas??

Sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. The fact that a baby with wind is not happy on his back is not actually true. Myth!
All babies have wind and what you describe doesn't sound particularly unusual. Can there be another reason for the fussiness? Hunger, overstimulation, etc?

The posseting sounds pretty normal to me.
My ds had reflux (same as yours, gaviscon helped). He was always happy on his back but we did try and avoid it just after a feed (not that it helped much).

I finally twigged once the reflux was a bit more sorted (which was meaning a daily massive puke up) that he was tired. His feeding was manic/archy and very on/off at times and that was usually when he was knackered. Unfortunately he never got himself off to sleep til about 13 months, but a quick go in the buggy/car used to sort him out.

I'm not sure what you could do to get him to sleep longer than 30-45 mins...more buggy/car/rocking maybe? Or just aim for more naps?

DT2 possibly had reflux - I will never know... He was fine flat in his pram and cot but was sick fairly often and possetted a lot, had acid breath, fussed at the end of feeds (erm actually screamed and writhed) and found it very difficult to get to sleep (I had to hold him - he couldn't self settle and still needs holding to sleep at night at 13 months). So it wasn't classic reflux but GP was happy to prescribe ranitidine. It gradually got better but I don't know if this was the reflux getting better or him adjusting to life, and me learning how to handle him better. He also had some of the characteristics of a high need baby (as defined by Sears) but not ALL of them.

Sorry that probably doesn't help.... but at least somebody else was as baffled by their baby...

Actually that does help, DW123; thanks for posting. Your DT2 sounds like an exaggerated version of DS2. I'm going to try and ride it out.
