Taking EBM out on the go

I have a 12 day old PFB who is BF well after an initial rocky start ( lazy feeder in hospital)

As a result of this I like to take a bottle of EBM out with me for those "just incase" moments.

This is taken from the fridge & placed in the insulated pocket of my Changing bag whilst we are out for say 2/3 hours max. Can you advise am I able to put this back in the fridge if we haven't used it?

I am getting rather confused with storage guidelines! Thank you

I would say that as long as the milk has stayed cool, it can go back in the fridge but I would probably try to use it within 24 hours to be on the safe side. I agree that storage guidelines are very confusing, but "the womanly art of breastfeeding" (LLL book) suggests that breast milk can stay fresh for a few hours at room temp. as it grows bacteria more slowly than formula would. Having said that, the book doesn't actually mention the situation you're describing, so I could be wrong!

the guidelines are vey confusing... every where seems to say something different

i have read that up to 8 hours at room temp is fine
and im sure i read 10 days in the fridge Shock (never done more than 4 days)

can i ask if you are out with your PFB could you not BF direct? at this early stage if he is hungry and needing milk its much better for your supply if he has it straight from the breast.

Well done, those early days are hard, but it doesn get easier Smile
