Lipase? In my soapy milk

Smellslikeweenspirits · 12/05/2012 10:02

my defrosted milk tastes soapy

This was also the case with DS years ago, but I only bothered trying to give him defrosted milk once or twice

This is the first lot I've tried with DD, she didn't like it

I've read about scalding it before freezing

But I can find any info about why it how this happens, and if it will always be the case. Will my milk always be soapy?

Also as an aside, I've Been expressing for the milk bank. I know they pasteurise it, so will that get rid of the soapyness or is my milk no good for them :(

"Sometimes thawed milk may smell or taste soapy. This is due to the breakdown of milk fats. The milk is safe and most babies wil still drink it. If there is a rancid smell from high lipase (enzyme that breaks down milk fats) activity when the milk has been chilled or frozen, the milk can be heated to scalding (bubbles around the edges, not boiling) after expression, then quickly cooled and frozen. This deactivates the lipase enzyme. Scalded milk is still a healthier choice than commercial infant formula."

From here. I think there's a bit about it in The Womanly Art too, I'll have a quick look.

Found it, it says near enough the exact same thing :)

have you looked on kellymom, that can be good for info, i am not sure if it will always be the case, i dont think so actually as i had this sometimes with milk i expressed for ds1 but it didnt always do this, i wonder if the time of day you express etc may make a difference?

re the milk bank, i would guess that many of the babies getting it are tube fed (prem babies) in which case i wouldnt think it would be an issue, a baby given it in a bottle may refuse it as it tastes a bit funny, but some babies will drink it anyway and a tube fed baby cant refuse it? do they even taste if if i goes down a tube through their nose to their tummy? i wouldnt have thought so? am sure the milk bank would contact you if there was a problem? so dont worry about that, you are doing a wonderful thing by donating :) i always wanted to as i always made way too much milk but there is no bank local to me :(

Thanks 5mad I'd read something similar. it smells ok but DD really isn't keen. Mind you she's not keen on bottles either. I might just ditch the whole thing

I'll drop the milkbank woman an email, I'm sure she'd know

The place I donate to isn't local, they send a courier on a motorbike to collect it. May be have a look on here. It does make me feel very virtuous
