So what you mean is, you don't want to breastfeed your school age child- and that's OK.

But there's nothing wrong with it if other mothers and children want to carry on.

You just don't like it (which is fine! It's not for everyone)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 12/05/2012 17:19

Eau - what are the benefits to the child?

EauRouge · 12/05/2012 17:29

Here is a good article outlining the benefits, and here is some research about natural weaning.

There are also some really good books if you're interested, such as this one, this one and this is a good one if you're interested in learning more about the cultural aspects of breastfeeding.

Thank you. Fascinating research. May have influenced me and dh on some things

pigletmania · 12/05/2012 19:53

not all true though, it dependss on the individual. Not all bottlefed babies will grow up to be thick and sick, and not all bf babies wll be the hight of intellignce and have good health.

EauRouge · 12/05/2012 20:12

I don't think anyone has said that. Breastfeeding is not a magic elixir that prevents children from ever getting sick, nor is formula poison that makes babies ill. But on the whole breastfed babies are healthier than formula fed babies, even accounting for other variables. There are lots of studies that have shown this.

piglet :( :(...."Not all bottlefed babies will grow up to be thick and sick, and not all bf babies wll be the hight of intellignce and have good health." You've been on these boards often enough to know that this is a poor response.....no one actually thinks this, and people posting here generally know to read the research not as a prediction for individual babies, but as evidence of overall differences and tendencies.

pigletmania · 13/05/2012 08:44

yes i know, tiktok but i guess i did not think about the respnse as it was typed in haste a bit, and i am still hormonal and pumping and trying to give ds as much bm as i can. I just felt whats the point as according to research it will not make much difference under 6 months anyway.

tiktok · 13/05/2012 09:33

?????

tiktok · 13/05/2012 09:52

Sorry piglet what I meant by ????? is what will not make much difference under 6 mths?

pigletmania · 13/05/2012 11:06

me expressing for ds, i have to give him formula when i have not expressed enough or at night when i am asleep. since the weather has gotten warmer and i am wearing my itechy nylon nursing bra my supply seems to have been better. Sometimes I think am I making a difference expressing, than its a lovely achievement seeing ds drink my milk and my nice slim figure Smile

tiktok · 13/05/2012 13:35

Most of the research done on bf is done on babies who were bf for less than 6 mths - the gastro, ear, chest infection is all with babies less tha 6 mths - so with the caveat that no one can predict what happens with an indivdual, I would say there is a bunch of evidence you are making a difference :)

pigletmania · 13/05/2012 13:47

yhanks tiktok Smile

alichicka · 14/05/2012 13:20

A friend sent me this link- thought it expressed quite well what a lot of people who do practise AP or extended BF think. geekout.blogs.cnn.com/2012/05/11/how-brainy-women-think-about-attachment-parenting/
