Is this reflux?

My DS is 11 weeks old and up until last wednesday he was a baby that barely threw up any milk after feeding. On wednesday night he started coughing and chocking an all of his night feed came out without him waking up , which really scared me as DS isn't much of a sleeping baby. We called nhs direct and theytold us not to worry. The same happened again on friday.
I told the hv what happened and she said that it wasn't reflux as he gained weight in the past two weeks. The problem is that since it happened he now throws up milk on nearly every meal, he also does a bit of a hard swallowing sound and coughs which i heard is a sign of reflux. The last feed that i gave him he threw up three times. He's still in a good mood though as if nothing has happened.
I'm really worried as DS has had problems gaining weight ever since he was born, and this really isn't helping.

You don't mention if you breast or bottle feed?

If you bottle feed, could it be a change of formula?

If not, does he have a cold? Swallowing mucus can make them sick and lots of couching can just cause them to bring their milk back up.

If he does have a cold, you could try raising the head end of the cot slightly to help him breathe more easily.

Sorry...
I give him a combination feed of breast and aptamil 1. It has beenlike this ever since his second week. I've started to take away a couple of breast feeds gradually.
I don'tthink that he has a cold as his breathing is fine and he isn't snotty.
I should have also mentioned that he is an extremely active little boy thatbarely sleeps, he's always kicking around and waving his little arms.

I also wonder if the reason why he didn't use to throw up is because I had to take domperidone to force the milk production.

You should keep an eye on his weight gain and the amount he continues to sick up. If it continues you should see GP as it could be reflux or (and this is probably not the case) pyloric stenosis, which is a digestive issue which makes babies throw up all their feeds and is easily corrected.

MiauMau · 10/05/2012 19:27

I'm taking him to the gp tomorrow, I want to sort this out as soon as possible.

It could still be reflux, even though the HV said it wasn't. If it's from week 2, then quite likely to be reflux or pyloric stenosis. He could still be putting on weight so perhaps that's why the HV thought it wouldn't be.

MiauMau · 10/05/2012 20:31

I think that i didn't explain myself properly, I've started giving him formula top ups from week 2. The reflux started being scary from last week's wednesday, before that ir was very little amounts very rarely.
Everything is just piling on, it started with his tongue tie and my lack of breast milk which made him lose too much weight at the start, he's a very active little boy that barely sleeps and won't fall asleep by himself. Things were finally settling, he was gaining weight after another drop of percentile, and now this?
I'm really tired...

I really feel for you OP. It sounds like it could be reflux. Does he get distressed at each feed, arching back, gulping feed?
Dd2 has silent reflux and it is miserable. She is on ranitidine and was on Gaviscon too and it has really helped her.
Good luck at GP's, don't let them fob you off. Not all refluxy babies lose weight, so it can be hard to diagnose. I refused to leave until they prescribed DD2 medicine at 16 days old!

Hunterj · 10/05/2012 20:44

Pyloric stenosis causes projectile vomiting and I think would have been happening much earlier on. I think that reflux can get worse around 3 months, so it could be that. What are the poos like? Have you changed your diet at all?

MiauMau · 10/05/2012 20:46

Thank you.
He only does the arching back when i bf from my left breast, and even that isn't that recurrent. After feeds he's usually fine, although today for the past two feeds he threw up milk right after he burped a very very loud burp.

Hunterj the poohs are the same, that hasn't really changed, a bit less one day a lot more the other and my diet has remained the same.

I'm wondering if the arching his back thing when on left side could mean his ligaments are tight. Have you looked up about cranial osteopathy? It's brill and can really ehlp after tongue tie snip and with no end of other probs.

MiauMau · 10/05/2012 21:21

I'm taking him on monday, the doula we hired after the birth suggested it because he was born by ventouse. We've been once, and unfortunately had to skip the follow up due to the crap weather.

My DS was born by ventouse and he responded really well to cranial osteopathy. He couldn't sleep on his back and continually arched it. It was so sad watching him not able to lie flat. After only 2 sessions, he could sleep on his back!

MiauMau · 11/05/2012 19:12

I totally undestand you. I could see a massive difference with just on session, I've also heard that it really helps with reflux.
We went to the gp today and he gave DS gaviscon, was really surprised not to get any recommendations about how to feed him or to lift one side of the bed.
Has anyone found the gaviscon instructions really odd?

I don't think this is reflux. My dd has this and didn't stop screaming until we had it under control. She also sicked up what looked like entire feeds from week 2.
Hope you get it sorted.

MiauMau · 11/05/2012 19:38

What would you say this is? What was wrong with your dd?
My ds doesn't scream, he just spews everything out.

OP posts:
Nikkim30 · 11/05/2012 19:41

I meant my dd had silent reflux, and it's painful rather than just sick.

MiauMau · 11/05/2012 20:21

The truth is that he seems more relaxed now that I've given hin the gaviscon
