My baby is 10 days old, he is formula fed, and I am going out tomorrow for a few hours but no idea how to keep a prepared bottle safely? In my changin bag I have them pouches with that keep warm stuff but doesn't keep them warm for long.is this even safe? What do you do?

Take a carton and use that.

ceeveebee · 09/05/2012 20:53

Congrats on your new baby!

I use ready made cartons when out and about. I take an empty sterilised bottle and a carton. You can feed at room temperature, or if your baby prefers you can take a flask of hot water to warm up, or ask at a cafe.

Good luck with your outing!

Yes use a carton. Much easier. Don't forget the scissors though?

I'd sterilise 2 bottles, put the lids on tight and take them empty in your bag. When it's time for a feed, put 3.5oz formula from a carton in each bottle (7oz in a small carton), feed one immediately, then the other should be ok for 2 hours later for his next feed.

You can buy boxes of cartons on amazon, good to have a stash of.

confuzed90 · 09/05/2012 20:58

Ok I have some cartons..is it ok to steralise a bottle before I leave, close it obviously and put into changin bag and then just pour the ready made carton in the bottle when he needs it and then he can drink it straight away?

Personally I do either of the following:

  1. take a sterilised bottle + carton of formula (don't forget scissors in your bag). When you feed, ask the cafe/restaurant for some hot water + jug and heat bottle. If I am very organised, I take a small flask of boiling water and jug to heat the bottle myself.

  2. add however many oz of boiling water to sterilised bottle. When you want to feed heat the water again, if needed, as above. Then add powder (you will need to put the correct number of scoops in a clean container).

Enjoy your time out! It is worth taking a second sterilised bottle and formula etc in case you get delayed or the baby needs an additional feed. Don't forget a spare change of clothes either - my children have always done explosive poos when out!

Ps. Once a feed is made up, you should not use it after one hour.

No he's not fussed about temperature, so cold/room temperature is ok?

Yeah it's fine. I only heated dds bottles if it was freezing out.
