Biting 10-month old!

Help! My 10 month old DD bit me so hard when BF that I burst into tears a) because her four little teeth hurt like hell and b) because I'd like to BF her for at least 12 months, and I don't want fear of biting to put me off. Any advice? I'm going to try to encourage her to unlatch before she gets playful/tired/distracted but once she has clamped down I really don't know how to make her stop. When she is latched on properly there's no problem, but as she draws to a close I'm on edge (but trying to hide it). Thank you

Lots of info on biting [[http://kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/biting/ here] and ways to prevent it too.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Truth. I do find Kellymom useful. Can you (or anyone else) comment from personal experience?

I stopped BF both of mine due to biting. DS was 11 months, DD 10. Did make me sad, but DS actually drew blood the third time he bit me and that was it, game over.

I reminded myself I'd done blooming well to get to that point.

DD3 had a bottle for a week at 6m and again at 9m while I was in hospital and then she had a maximum of 120ml but more normally around 90mls (she did have some bfs as well but only once or twice a day). She was on no solids either at 6m due to her health so was just on ebm/formula.

Other DDs might have had slightly more - maybe 120-150mls at a push but I don't think they were doing anything like the back of a formula packet said or what their FF friends were taking (200-250mls at least).

Sorry ignore my completely wrong post! It's late and I got confused!!

DD1 bit probably twice but was put on the floor and told no! then I studiously ignored her for a minute or two. DD2 did the same just the once at a similar age and was treated the same - no more biting. DD3 has never bitten me. They bf to 3.6y, 4.6y+ & 2.7y+ and I have bf them all the way through teething (DD3 is currently cutting back molars though) without any serious biting. The occasional 'Ooh what's that over there?' from them while still bfing has occurred however

Ouch indeed Truth! Hmm.. I'm trying to battle on but when she has stopped sucking and has her mouth closed with her teeth either side it's very difficult to make her stop without potentially creating a more painful bite.

Thanks also Bookbird - glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Dd has been through a few phases of biting each time i have done things suggested on kelly mom stopping nursing ether completly or briefly being effective for us. I always get very on edge after she bites me but this wears off after a couple of days. Dd is 15 months and i think the few times have all been teething related.

JeanBillie · 13/05/2012 21:10

Thanks DeathMetal. DD has now decided to refuse a bottle or beaker for milk, so I am gritting my teeth and getting on, but it's making me tense. She is definitely teething so I hope it'll pass soon.

My DD did the same at the same age, but grew out of it. I watched her like a hawk and put my finger in her mouth to break the seal the moment she did it. What actually worked though was I noticed she was biting only on one side, so I changed her position on that side to rugby ball hold so she fed the same way as on the other side iyswim. It worked a treat.

HappyJustToBe · 15/05/2012 14:54

I feel your pain. It was short lived with DD but she still does a biting face sometimes whilst feeding and the fear floods back!

JeanBillie · 20/05/2012 22:06

Thanks Happy and Huggy - only just spotted your replies. We are hanging on in there - she's taking expressed milk in a cup now and I'm managing to take her off before she bites when I do feed her.
