Best way to manage bite wounds (yuck, sorry) after they've happened?

My toddler goes through phases of biting where he thinks it's amusing to clamp down and drag the nipple through his bloody sharp teeth. I've given up trying to do much about it as its very much linked to teething and goes of its own accord - and he's on his last molars, hurrah.

I find that the broken skin is fine for a couple of days until a scab forms and then feeding is agony for a week.

He has just done it again - is there any way I can manage the bite to avoid the agony stage, or is it inevitable?

Try adjusting his position a bit. Ds also does this. And when he falls asleep feeding he clamps down and it is very painful to remove him...

If you have scabs forming try moist wound healing dressings (ask your pharmacist) as they prevent scab formation and wounds heal 2x as fast.

If he just won't let go then you could try gently pressing his face into your breast for a second (not a long time) as this will make him open his mouth to breathe. If you have your other hand just by your breast you can cover your nipple so he can't have another go!

You might also find stopping the feed when he stops actively feeding also helps as often toddlers bite at the end of a feed when they aren't actually feeding any more.

Sorry but :o at adjusting his position. I can't keep him still! Yy to the clamping down while drifting off though. And then trying not to screech and wake them up!

Truth I will try those dressings, thanks. I've dug out my Lansinoh in the meantime to keep the area moist.
