braless at night - leaking

BigBoPeep · 03/05/2012 13:34

I've lived in my bra since the birth - would really like to take it off at night if I can, but I leak a LOT. I'm getting on top of the oversupply of milk in terms of feeding the baby by blockfeeding in 12hr blocks, but still leak plenty. Currently I can BF at night with barely waking up, just enough to hoik out a boob, but would just like to be braless for a while for comfort....

I considered lying on a maternity mat? Any other tips? Maybe I'll leak less without the pressure of a bra?

Could you wear a fitted vest top with breast pads?

HarrietJ0nes · 03/05/2012 14:06

I lay on a towel.

notjustamummythankyou · 03/05/2012 17:09

I do both! I wear a soft sleep bra (more like a bra top) and feed lying on a towel. The sleep bra keeps the breast pads in place - couldn't sleep without them - the bed would be very soggy by daybreak!

SardineQueen · 03/05/2012 17:25

I'm afraid that I never found any real solution to this.

Lying on a towel sometimes helps but it depends how leaky you are.

Wearing a bra in beds sucks doesn't it.

I wear these: www.johnlewis.com/65499/Product.aspx?source=63258&sku=231054654 Dead comfy!

lilypadz worn under a Lycra vest top, no leaks!!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 06/05/2012 12:21

My best breastfeeding garment buy was a bamboo stretchy vest by Emma Jane - they are pricy (try ebay_ but the business. Very comfy, stretchy, no hard bits or seams and they are tight enough to wear breast pads in at night. BTW, they're billed as something you can wear under normal day clothes to facilitate feeding, and I never found them much good for that - there's a strange t-shaped piece of fabric that supports your breasts when you unhook the front down, and it always shows above the neckline of tops! But in bed, it is fab. And bamboo is antibacterial and seems to repell pong, so you can wear it a few nights before changing.

I bought a stretchy comfy sleep bra from amazon. Then 2 breasts pads per boob. Plus towel underneath me. I also often changed the breast pads during the night after feeds.

So it's not just me that leaks like a flood, and hasn't been without a bra in 3 weeks...

I'm going to try a fitted vest top and double up on the breast pads.

Thanks for starting this thread.

LoveInAColdClimate · 06/05/2012 14:49

It's not just me, then!? Thanks for starting this. I was going to get some Lilypadz but the Amazon reviews seem to suggest they're more for the slightly leaky than those who produce a milky torrent. I think I'll try a tight vest and two pads tonight - so sick of sleeping in a bra. He's only 5 weeks old - don't fancy another few years of this!

BroomForMyChin · 06/05/2012 16:21

It does eventually settle down. I think mine did at about 8 weeks but it's all a bit hazy now DD is only 9 months but I think I've blocked out the first 3 months of her life.

BigBoPeep · 06/05/2012 18:57

i like the bamboo idea, and think i have a vest top somewhere already - will try that. i put a maternity at down last night, was great not to wear a bra, but not so good to wake up clammy and with a soggy baby!

was going to invest in some lilypadz tomorrow but will put that on hold until a fellow flooder can confirm they work for us!

i'v been on 12hr blockfeeding for a week now but still leak like heck! i wonder if the leaking is linked to oversupply? eg: milk leaks out, boob makes more, so more milk leaks out and boob makes more and so on....

They were fab for me. Your nipple needs to be erect to produce milk and because the hold it flat or inverted milk doesn't come into them so they don't leak. Also helps reduce soreness as they are held in a relaxed state so not full of milk / blood and don't rub on your bra or breast pads. I used them with DC2 and DC3 and thought I simply didn't leak second time round until I had a day without them!! The also are much less unsightly under clothes than breast pads. Though I have posted this on here before and they don't seem to be the magic solution for everyone.

I am wearing Mothercare sleep bras. Otherwise I would be changing my sheets every night! i leak much more in the night than in the daytime. In the first week or so I didn't bother with the bra, i just covered the other breast with a muslin whilst feeding, but after a while that didn't cut it any more.
I look forward to being able to sleep naked again!
