Incorrect milk info from Sainsbury's?

I received an email from Sainsbury's this morning as part of their Little Ones email. On it it said:

How the weeks are flying now that your baby is almost six months old. Around this time your little one will start taking an interest in food and you'll be preparing to start weaning. If you think your baby is ready for solid food before turning six months, talk to you health visitor about when to reduce the milk feeds and start experimenting with new tastes.

I didn't think you were supposed to reduce milk feeds and that it was up to the baby to drop them as and when they wanted to and that milk should still be their main calorie source especially at the beginning of weaning?

It seems particularly wrong as it links dropping feeds to weaning early (before 6 months). Milk is a baby's main food till one, why would you drop feeds if you want to "experiment with new tastes"? What rubbish...

scrumdiddlydoo · 03/05/2012 08:09

Wow, that really is a load of rubbish!

Gina1981 · 03/05/2012 08:59

I too received this email and read up to that point and deleted straight away!! How have they employed to right this rubbish!! Obviously someone who hasn't had children and hasn't a clue in bringing one up!!

Gina1981 · 03/05/2012 09:00

Stupid auto check.. Meant to say

Who have they employed to write this rubbish!!

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 03/05/2012 10:18

Email them and point out their error!

showtunesgirl · 03/05/2012 11:11

Done! I've emailed them.

Gina, I would suggest you do the same. The more people complain the better!

Finally got a reply:

^Thanks for your email and patience.

I?ve contacted the relevant department and they have advised me that we will review the content of the email. However, the information isn?t advising our members to reduce milk feeds as such, but telling members that they should discuss with their Health visitor before they do so. All our recipes and nutritional advice has been approved by the BNF (British Nutrition Foundation).

We appreciate the time you?ve taken to contact us. All feedback we receive helps us improve our products and services. We look forward to seeing you in store again soon.^

But surely, this is wrong in the fact that they are saying that you should ask a HV in the first place about reducing the milk feeds? Confused

It isn't just sainsburys sending that out I got exactly the same wording from pampers and I think bounty. It was two anyway, one before dd was 6 months and one last week (9 months) but still addressed like she was 6 months Hmm
Total, total rubbish. I have unsubscribed. I too wanted to complain but didn't have the time and only thought if doing so after I'd deleted.

TruthSweet · 22/05/2012 14:33

It's a bit like saying 'you can ask your HV about feeding your 6m baby honey'. Well yes you can, but if s/he is well trained s/he will tell you not to use it but if you take that as 'CYA' advice from Sainsbury's and it's actually fine then you may do it anyway.

Gina1981 · 22/05/2012 16:15

I got a reply a couple of weeks ago and was told that someone would contact me to discuss the contents of the email!! Still waiting. Let's hope that no other mother will be influenced by the rubbish they write!!
