Stopping BF after colostrum - engorgement and how to deal with it

This time round, I have decided to stop BF now that I've gven DS his colostrum. He's 3 days old. No judgements please.

My boobs are engorged and starting to get painful - I haven't fed since last night. What sound I do - pump to take the edge off, or let the milk dry up naturally ast this early stage?

I would just hand express enough off to make you feel comfortable.

I'm guessing you've got some pain relief too?

I BF my ds1 for a week then stopped midwife told me to just 'leave well alone'! I did and all was fine after a couple of days. It is painful but like I say was only a couple of days and pain went.
No judgments at all here!!!! It really irks me that you feel the need to put that it's completely YOUR choice Smile
Hope ur ok.

Express off a tiny bit if you need to. Get some savoy cabbage and whack it in the fridge. The cold leaves in your bra are meant to really help.

It's up to you really. There are people who recommend cold turkey (supportive bra, don't touch em) and people who recommend a bit of expressing for comfort. I think it's a bit like whether you rip a plaster off in one go, or peel it off bit by bit Grin.

Thanks all. I have decided to just leave them alone, and after nearly 2 days of not BFing or expressing, they're still quite hard and engorged, but they're not getting any worse. Midwife said today that a supportive bra is all I should need at this stage, and the milk should dry up and the pain should reduce within the next day or so.

Its the right decision for me, my baby and my family. Cheers momma and everyone else.

Warm facecloth over boobs in a warm bath

Pain relief too and savoy cabbge leaves

FanjolinaJolie · 03/05/2012 21:10

Two bras might help, or sports type bra and tight vest to compress a bit?

Kayano · 03/05/2012 22:03

I did exactly the same. I left them and had a warm bath a couple of times. Then randomly
They leaked a little

And that was that Grin
