dewberry1 · 14/02/2006 10:44

Thanks for all your words of wisdom..your fab!!!
Just one last question....When i breast fed last time all be it for 8 days i lost weight so fast and was thinner than before the pregnancy..this time as im gonna bottle feed will i end up a hefferlump and be stuck with excess weight???? thats one thing im worried about..ha..how pathetic..i should be more worried about pushing out a huge babe through a little tunnel...hahaha

yes probably

you can't have it both ways

mummytosteven · 14/02/2006 10:48

I don't think 8 days breastfeeding would be enough to give you significant weight loss.

I used SMA Gold as it was one of the two on offer on the ward. People on here tend to rate Aptamil.

mummytosteven.....maybe the weightloss was to do with me walking round non stop as ds had colic ..who knows.. i thought even a little time breast feeding helped.!!!!!!

Cow&Gate Omneo Comfort1, it is the easiest milk for baby to digest after Breast milk.

poppiesinaline · 14/02/2006 11:17

Dewberry. Like you - when I bf the weight just fell off me and I ended up thinner than before I was pregnant. That was after no 1 and no 2. With No 3 I thought I am not even going there. So bottle fed from day one and I did keep the weight on a little bit more. Maybe because I was a bit older, maybe because it was my 3rd and also not bf. TBH I wanted to keep a bit of weight on. But I have lost it all again now! (No 3 now 10 months). Do you normally have a problem with keeping weight on? In answer to your original question - I used Aptamil - apparently it 'tastes' more like breast milk than other formulas so MN told me anyway!!!

dewberry1 · 14/02/2006 11:27

poppy,,no dont have weight problem just want to get back to my normal 12 and not end up a 14..how vain!!
I used aptamil with ds1 afetr i gave up on breast feeding and it was fine so may use that again altho friends have suggested cow and gate...god there are too many choices..ha

I used SMA gold after 7 days and she's still on it now, 9 months. One of the reasons your weight drops quickly in the first week is beacuse your uterus shrinks back to its normal size and you loose all the extra fluid, blood etc, that you had while you were pregnant. This will happen anyway so I wouldn't worry about it.

I Bottle Fed SMA GOld from day 1 - no probelms.
Boobs did get v sore (no leakage though) I was advised to use Savoy cabbage leaves - outside ones only, put in fridge in bag of water to keep them v cold, then put one on each boob - something in the leaf helps dry the milk up! Might feel like a plum, but by god it worked! HTH

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Hipp Organic formula. I used SMA Gold as I didn't know about the Hipp at the time and wanted to keep my son on the one brand, but once my son moved onto the follow-on milk around 7 months old I used the Hipp. They do both an infant and a follow-on version.

fob · 15/02/2006 21:45

looking for a good milk to move ds onto after 5 months of breastfeeding. didn't like aptimil - any suggestions? he is a hungry horace!

mogwai · 15/02/2006 22:30

cow and gate fan here. Used the green one from day one, then the blue, then the purple at 6 months.

I heard recently that a hospital in Cheshire has "banned bottle feeding" and is refusing to stock bottles/formula on the maternity wards. Can you believe this???!!!

julienetmum · 15/02/2006 22:46

I beleive that a few hospitals ask new mums to bring in their own formula, only keeping small emergency supplies in. Not that bottle feeding is banned.

mcmudda · 15/02/2006 22:56

I'm a breastfeeder BUT!! was bottlefed from day 1 (and I'm still standing).

My mum used SMA Gold for both me and my brother because it was the most expensive and she figured that must be for a reason - get-what-you-pay-for reasoning.

harriea · 16/02/2006 14:18

I feel incredibly strongly about this. Tried to breastfeed for 10 days and HATED it. Baby in retrospect OBVIOUSLY starving. Fantastic maternity nurse (highly recommended if anyone needs one) then arrived and persuaded me to stop as was producing no milk even after trying to establish it for 10 days. USed Cow and Gate from then on. No probs, no regrets, will go straight to bottle next time (although in hospital will I have the confidence to confront the scary midwives??). I was bottle fed and doesn't seem to have done me any harm.....

izzybiz · 17/02/2006 08:59

I bottle fed both my children, used cow & gate for both. i know alot of people use SMA, but my mum found it made me and my brothers all sicky.

Highlander · 17/02/2006 12:33

when I started to use formula in DS's cereal, Mners recommended Aptimil as it is easier on the tummy.

tiktok · 17/02/2006 12:38

mogwai - urban myth. How could a maternity unit 'ban' bottle feeding? There are a number of hospitals now which ask formula feeding mothers to bring in their own formula and feeding equipment, which seems to me fair enough. After all, the breastfeeding mothers bring their own

They do continue to stock formula for mothers who have forgotten/change their minds/need it for medical reasons/want to mix feed

wools · 17/02/2006 14:09

I tried breastfeeding my first ds and it was disastrous so fed him SMA Gold with success. My second ds was also bottlefed - went through a few formulas before settling on Aptamil First.

mogwai · 18/02/2006 20:40

tiktok, the hospital is Leighton Park in Crewe. One of my colleagues works there and read it in the trust newsletter.

But even so, how could anyone be expected to turn up with sterilised bottles? They don't stay sterile for long do they? Was puzzled about this.

Mum2OneAndOneMore · 18/02/2006 21:01

I would like to add, that just because you had a bad experience first time round does not mean it will be bad second time round

I breastfed first ds for 4 days, he never toke to it i got very very stressed & it just did not work so moved to Aptamil on day 4 oh what a relief

This time round i was thinking oh no the dreaded breast feeding but i really wanted to try as its much easier & alot less hasstle especially at night dd has really taken to it & i have actually enjoyed my experience of it this time round, i am still managing to breastfeed but admit to using the odd bottle of aptamil as dd seems to need it, goodluck with whatever you do i really though i would have given up by now but dd is 4 weeks & i am still managing it
