What's the quickest way to stop breastfeeding without causing problems?

dd is 8 months, bf on demand, absolutely no pattern to feeds whatsoever, at completely different times on different days.
She eats pretty much no solid food.
It's a very long story but I feel I need to stop as soon as possible.
She will have a few sips from a bottle of formula on some days but not others (have been offering it once a day) very hit and miss really.
She is on special formula for dairy allergy.

Am thinking maybe feed her once myself and then next time she seems hungry to offer a bottle and try alternately like that?

Any ideas? What will happen if I just stop? She will take a bottle when she realises there's no milk from me I presume but what will happen to my milk?

Hi
Didn't want to leave you unanswered, have you spoken to your health visitor or a breastfeeding counsellor? They might be able to suggest ways to wean your DD. I'd also check Kellymom, I'm sure I've seen weaning methods on there previously.

I am no expert, but have felt the pain of engorgement. Can you try not breastfeeding say 8-12 or designating chunks of the day in which you don't bf? I would try my hardest to do it slowly if possible.

I would then try getting her to drink milk/formula from a sippy cup. Although mine seems to prefer a pint glass!

Like I say, i'm not an expert, but in the same boat. Good luck!

Hi catsu. It's recommended that you drop one feed at a time, one a week being the recommended schedule to avoid engorgement and possible blocked ducts or mastitis.
If you don't mind me asking, are you sure you want to stop suddenly if your daughter hardly eats any solids, is allergic to cow's milk and doesn't like formula? With due respect, wouldn't it be safer to get her used to no bm gradually?

I think she is allergic to other things too and is getting ill repeatedly through Breast milk as im obviously eating all sorts of things.
With her not eating (I think her allergies have put her off) then moving to formula which I know is safe for her seems the best option and better to do it asap
It's hard to switch one feed at a time as she doesn't have set feeds so if she seems hungry I just offer her milk.
Good idea to have a set time in mind so if she refuses the bottle then I can keep offering it for a 3 or 4 hr time period before I offer her a breast feed again, that makes sense!
