I think my 14mo is starting to self wean

Im 13w pg at the moment. I really struggled the first few weeks with sore nipples, but have gotten through that phase but now DS seems to be losing interest in the boob.

My boobs no longer feel full after a long day at work and sometimes when I offer it to him, he will either cry or have a super quick feed. His solid intake has gone up significantly. When I am working, he gets a bedtime feed and a couple of shorter nighttime feeds. When I am not at work, he also gets a couple of super short daytime feeds (ended by him).

Yesterday he was clearly unhappy when I offered him the boob and settled when he got a bottle instead. Today I had to offer him both boobs twice for him to be satisfied. I have never been great at expressing anyway and suspect I will get nothing out at the moment judging by how empty my boobs feel.

I don't feel ready to stop :(
He's still my little baby... Any advice on how to keep going? Or is it a losing battle?

well, milk production can dwindle a bit when you first get pregnant, and the taste changes apparantly, but it may only be a temporary thing and your normal supply may resume in a few weeks...

My DD was only 7 months old when I got pregnant again, and having only really just started on solids, she really needed the milk. I was a SAHM and so just went with the flow as she fed A LOT! I carried on until I was about 8 months pregnant and we had to wean (outside circumstances)

Not sure how helpful I am being, sorry Grin

I guess I would just carry on offering and take his lead. You really, really can't force them to feed, so if this is the end of the road, I would stop and look forward to your new baby in a few months!

I know it is a bit Sad to realise they are growing up so fast but you get used to it (my two are teenagers now)

Congrats on your pregnancy btw Smile

Not a losing battle at all - I have bf 3 children through pg, in fact I bf DD1 through DD2's pg and then DD3's pg and bf DD2 through DD3's pg and now through DC4's pg (currently 20w and DD3 is also bfing). With each pg my supply drops to nothing around wk 14 and then colostrum back from 24-26 weeks and my DDs have just 'dry nursed' when there was no milk and gorged themselves silly on the colostrum when it came back!

I think for me what helped was not offering an alternative to nursing when they wanted to nurse and if they later on wanted a drink/snack they got it rather than offering it straight away so they got used to nursing purely for comfort rather than dietary reasons Wink.

DD1 did self-wean during DD3's pg but then she was 3.6y and it wasn't due to lack of milk (I had colostrum then at 8m pg) but due to her jaw development. DD2 is 4.6y - nurses about once every 2-3 weeks now and DD3 is 2.7y - she nurses daily. DD2 is right at the end of bfing and is very close to self-weaning.

If you have a La Leche League group (or indeed other bfing group) local to you, you may find some other tandem nursing/bfing through pg mums to talk to.

Whether you have a group local or not Hilary Flower's book Adventure in Tandem Nursing is a great read and really informative with lots of personal experience from lots of different mums.
