19 month old with thrush - can I use Canesten?

She's got it on her mouth for which I'm using the gel. I now have a flaky nipple (niiiiiiiiice ) and she has developed nasty pimply raised areas on her labia. Is it OK just to use Canesten? I have Daktarin in the house too.

Definitely don't use daktarin. One for the gp. There is nystatin for the oral thrush, but would check with gp on the vaginal.

ohbugrit · 29/04/2012 10:55

OK. It's just miconazole gel I've been prescribed for her mouth in the past.

Go see your out of hours gp today ... Thrush in your ducts is horrendous and you don't want this to get any worse for either of you.

I can't remember what the GP prescribed for baby down there thrush, I think it might have been canesten, I am more just commenting on the above post about nystatin for oral thrush for anybody else reading, the breast feeding network says that the daktarin oral gel is more effective, and nysastin should only the preferred treatment in in certain circumstances in particular premature babies. See here: www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BfN_Thrush_leaflet_Feb_2009.pdf

miconazole gel is the right thing for the mouth (otherwise known as daktarin gel)

ohbugrit · 29/04/2012 11:03

Nystatin is usually only suggested for tiny babies because miconazole gel is thick and is potentially a choking risk. Not an issue for a toddler whose preferred diet is raisins and peas!

Yes, do get a GP ASAP, take along the leaflet from the BfN so you make sure you get the most appropriate treatment prescribed (not nystatin). Make sure you keep treating both of you for 10 days after last symptoms so you don't reinfect each other. (that means a mega tube of the oral gel a 15ml tube will only last a couple of days)

OOH though really? We're both fine and happy. It doesn't seem urgent. Although I can't get us to a GP until Tues otherwise cos I'm working all day. DH could take DD first thing tomorrow.

Well I guess not super urgent, ASAP might be a nit melodramatic, it is not life threatening, just annoying and if it got bad could threaten your breastfeeding relationship, it can just be really difficult to treat so you want to try and start treating it properly sooner rather than later. You don't want to end up with ductal thrush then you will have to start taking fluconazol. If you are both feeling ok and have the gel to treat the mouth and cream for your nipples, the bum can wait a couple of days if your daughter is not bothered.

fapl · 29/04/2012 11:38

With all my waffle I haven't even answered your original question re the canes ten on the bum. Maybe try google if no one else answers? If canesten is ok (which I think it might be, not 100% sure) and you have it in the house...

fapl · 29/04/2012 11:40

bit, not nit, of course just being very mums net and correcting my spelling, although probably loads of other typos I haven't spotted, just a bad typer here typing things quickly and not rereading,

Thanks for all your help :)
