Is aptimil really better than hipp organic?

dtds are now 7.5 months and gave up bf a month ago. From 3 weeks old they had one ff a day of aptimil which Iwas told was the best. Now they are eating 3 meals a day really well dh and I are wondering whether to swap to hipp organic - purely for financial reasons but we don't want to save money but affect dtds health. So confused and don't want to make wrong decision as it's hard enough not bfing them like I did with dd1.

I don't think nutritionally it is significantly different.

As I understood it a lot of the reputation of aptimal is that it is easier on the tummy, but that wouldn't be an issue for that age, like it might be for a new or very young baby. :)

I'd give it a go and see if they like it, they are getting nutrition from their other diet too so I really can't see any reason not to.

No it isn't better.

Nutritionally they are all much of a muchness. Sometimes dc show a preference for the taste of one, or one might suit a baby more than another, but that is down to the individual baby.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 26/04/2012 12:26

This is why aptamil charge more - to make anxious mums think they are doing the best for their baby. They are all fine nutritionally, just go for the one that suits your baby and you the best.

I switched from aptamil to cow and gate to save money with no ill effects

janey223 · 27/04/2012 10:08

I switched to hipp from aptamil and the only difference was in my purse !

Formula is very tightly regulated, the ingredients cannot differ much by law, but Aptimil deliberately price high to give the impression of a premium product and they target HCPs with marketing. There may be slight variations in taste, but other than that they are all the same. That's why they have to work so hard on branding.

Go for it with the change.

okay, I'll finish the aptamil and move onto Hipp. HV told me Aptamil was much better as it contains something that feeds the probiotics but girls are now healthy weights so I'm less concerned. Thanks for being so positive.

Your health visitor has been heavily targeted with advertising and has fallen for it...

It's not 'much better' at all. Go ahead and move onto Hipp, you'll be fine Smile.

no they are all much of a muchness, i have used and do still use hipp organic for my dd (also used it for ds4) purely because it is one of the only organic formulas that you can get and i like ot use organic when i can :)

KellyKettle · 01/05/2012 15:46

You can get probiotic drops and add them to their food/milk anyway so I wouldn't worry about that difference.

My g.p. has fallen for the aptamil bollocks too Hmm told me to change from c&g to aptamil. Um? Hello? It's the same product! Angry

shockers · 01/05/2012 18:18

When DS2 came to us as a fostered baby (4 weeks early), straight from hospital, they'd put him on SMA and he had terrible trouble pooing. I switched him onto Hipp and a couple of days later, he was absolutely fine. He stayed on it for 12 months and then we changed to goat's milk, which he still drinks. He's now a sporty, healthy, 12 yr old, so I can recommend Hipp (and goat's milk) wholeheartedly.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 01/05/2012 18:24

If you feel up to it Hotheels, complain to the surgery. You knew he/she was talking bollocks, but imagine someone on a tight income falling for it and scrimping elsewhere to pay for it Angry.

hotheels · 01/05/2012 18:43

Lucky I had seen it mentioned on mn and knew what was what iyswim? youllaugh I was in our local shop coop the other day and saw that aptamil was £2.10 more expensive than c&g Shock

notcitrus · 01/05/2012 18:57

They're all essentially the same - there's no evidence that any of the stuff Aptamil add makes any difference to the health of the baby.

My HV said if I wanted to try formula, start with the cheapest, see if baby likes it, if not try a different one. Though in practice I went for SMA as I grew up OK on it (probably had less nutrients then, too!)
