Milk has come in and my breasts are too painful to feed. Should I express?

He latched on really well from birth, but since my milk came in yesterday my boobs are rock hard and unbearably painful.

He can't latch on at all. It's like a dog trying to bite into a beachball.

Hand expressing is too painful but I can express with a hand-pump.

When I do, it's just replaced by more and defeats the object.

OWOWOWOWOWOW! I don't want to give up :(

Try 'reverse pressure softening' which helps to push back some of the oedema in the nipple/areola so it's not all spread out and hard.

Also, having a warm shower and letting the water run over your breasts can help trigger a let down (face the wall not the curtain!) so when you get out you can try bfing with softer breasts.

This link has lots of help on how to cope with/resolve engorgement.

Congratulations on your new baby boy Thanks

Brilliant thank you thank you! Reading that link I've been doing it all wrong since the milk came in (doing one big pump drain then ignoring the issue Confused ) but will make a new start as of now. Off to nurse and try some softening. :)
