If my BF baby is lactose intolerant should I also avoid lactose?

DS may have a lactose intolerance so should I also avoid lactose? I have removed it from his diet but he still seems to have tummy pain so I am not sure if lactose that I have goes to him through my milk. Would appreciate any advice as I don't want to give up lovely cheese, butter etc unless I have to!

Breastmilk contains lactose so avoiding it yourself will make no difference. Are you sure lactose is the issue or could it be an intolerance to cows milk protein (which would be influenced by your diet)

Not really sure what it is to be honest. He was diagnosed with reflux at six and a half months just after starting weaning. The reflux meds didn't entirely fix it so the doc said it may be food allergy so to restart weaning cautiously. The only common allergen he was having was cows milk so I thought it might be lactose.

may be a reaction to cows milk protein then as lactose is in your breastmilk

Ok, thank you for the advice. I will avoid cows milk products then and see if that helps. It's very strange as he was ok with my milk previously (when I was having milk) but I guess having yoghurt daily was too much cows milk once we started weaning, and that tipped him over his threshold.

DD2 was exactly like that. She was refluxy from birth and on medication, but me cutting out dairy didn't seem to make a difference. Then she started having yogurts at 6 months and it was a nightmare. She would be sick and in pain within 30 mins of having them.

So I cut out all dairy from both our diets and it definitely made a big difference. She was so much better. Last week at 10.5 months, we tried her on dairy again and she was fine. I tried yogurt a few days ago and that seemed to make her angry so we are going to just avoid them, but other dairy products seem fine.

If you are avoiding dairy, just remember to check labels. Some manufacturers sneak milk protein in the strangest places - crinkly ready salted crisps, chicken slices and some dark chocolate.
