Here is my plan.

I have bought a breast pump. It came with a bottle.

I will sterilise all the gubbins by boiling it in a big pan of water for Some Time.

I will keep the milk in the bottle in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

I will then pop out safe in the knowledge that if I am delayed my baby can have a bit of milk to be getting on with.

Will my plan work?

As long as baby will take a bottle. Mine never would, managed to trick her with breastflow bottles a couple of times but other than that she would only take the boob. Good luck, hope you have fun when you're out xx

Thanks. Except I'm really thinking of being able to do a supermarket shop, or maybe the odd exercise class without worrying that I've been longer than half an hour and she might be shouting for me. Well we'll try and see how we do.

I never managed to use a breast pump. I'd sit there with full breasts, pumping away, for 20 minutes, look down and realise I hadn't even covered the bottom of the bottle. I tried a variety of pumps with all four of my children. It's worth a shot, though.

It will keep in the fridge for up to 8 days Silentboob.

Here is some good info about storage of expressed bm from Breastfeeding Network.

Expressing isn't usually recommended before about 4-6 weeks because your supply will be getting established, but you may be thinking about later on anyway.

Sometimes the best laid plans don't work. Speaking as someone with a 21 w/o DD serial bottle refuser. :( Hope your plan works though!

Try the medela electric pump - its the most efficient I have tried. And my exclusively breast fed 5 week old took a bottle fine from my h, when I was out the other day. So yes it can work perfectly!

showtunesgirl · 21/04/2012 21:39

Keep at it though winterland as my DD did take a bottle from weeks 3-8, then she got a cold and we took a break and from week 10 onwards she would have nothing to with a bottle!

I've done a supermarket shop, been for a hour long massage, even went to the cinema once without expressing. I just feed her right before leaving and then come straight home afterwards.
The cinema trip (which was a one off) I was gone 3hrs. We live 7 minute walk from the cinema and there was a plan for DH to bring her to me in the pram if she needed a feed during the film and I'd have come out into the reception to do it. I rang the cinema to ask them what time the film was due to finish so we could work out what time I'd be home. I fed her to sleep and walked out the door as soon as she fell off the boob (had she not done this, or fed directly before I left I was going to try again the following day). She woke 20 minutes before I was due home and I fed her as soon as I got in. But that's the longest I've ever left her. I am regularly separated from her for an hour when I have a nurses appointment for my section wound to be dressed or supermarket shop etc. Enjoy your exercise class, am sure DC will be fine.

It's not a big bummer if it doesn't work. Just thought it might be useful if it does. I never expressed with my last 2, but then I didn't have anyone to leave them with so I dragged them round the supermarket with me. Now I do have someone to look after the little one while I'm out, but a couple of times I have come home to a very fidgety baby, and the person looking after her wondered if we might try an expressed bottle in the fridge just in case.

She's only 6 weeks old, and a frequent snacker :)

I have a 6mth old bottle refuser. Try cup feeding if shes a bottle refuser.

Personally I would have shopping delivered whilst out and spend the time having hair/massage/nails done (dreams) or an hour in library (more likely!)

lagoonhaze · 22/04/2012 14:59

Also when warming milk I was told if it's separated to swirl it not shake it
