Stopped BFing and have tender, lumpy boobs

Can anyone tell me if this is normal, and if so, how long till it sorts itself out and my boobs go back to normal?!

I stopped BFing 4 days ago, we managed over a year and we were down to just 1 feed a day - and I didn't think there was all that much there when I did feed her! - so I thought I'd have no issues at all. However I've got a few big lumps in both boobs and they're quite tender. Is that normal?

Yes, it's normal. It will last for between a few days and a couple of weeks. Probably less rather than longer as you have been feeding so little recently.
You can massage yourself to help relieve the lumps and you can express if you need to relieve any pressure and related pain.
It will pass soon enough though.

I was just about to as the same thing, I was only feeding 18 month ds at night and really wasn't expecting to be sore, this is night 6 of not bf and my left boob is really tender, I don't really want to express, as thinking that may extend the problem?

Duh I didn't think to manually express! Had a bath and massaged the lumps and squeezed some milk out and I'm much more comfortable! Thanks!!

Expressing a little bit to relieve the pain will help stop blocked ducts and mastitis. It may slightly prolong the drying-up process, but that's surely a price worth paying to avoid blocked ducts, mastitis or worse?

I haven't stopped yet, but when I do I intend to do it as gentle as my boobs need - they've done 18 months good service so far - they deserve a bit of TLC when I stop feeding Grin

Expressing won't prolong the process by much.
When I stopped feeding I expressed a couple of times a week or so apart, when the pressure got too painful.
The relief it gave me was more than worth the extra one or two days it might have added to the time it took to dry up.
It isn't necessary to express yourself empty, just enough to relieve the pressure and to clear some milk out through the ducts.
