Moving on to cow's milk - am I doing this right?

DS is almost one. For the last 5 months he has been ff and LOVES his milk - still on four bottles a day of about 6 oz per feed.

As he nears his first birthday, I am trying to introduce cow's milk as I find the cost of formla crippling. Currently just mixing it in with formla - so 3oz formla topped up with 3/4 oz of cow's milk.

Is that right? Also, and this will sound REALLY dumb, do I keep volumes the same? It just seems to be less viscious and so I worry he might need more Hmm.

He's fully weaned and eats very well. Weight is (and has been) 75th percentile since birth.

My DD was FF, she moved onto cows milk just before her first birthday. Cost was a factor but so was reliable supplies. We were living overseas.
She certainly didn't notice a difference in texture or thickness. She had always and remains a thinnygen.

Once he is 12 months he should be on 300ml a day, have a look here Smile

Regarding the transfer - possibly not what you were asking but thought it worth a mention..

When I was doing this with my 12mo who adored his milk, I fully thought I would have to gradually introduce the cows milk and slowly reduce the formula until he was on 100% cows.

then one day out of curiosity before I started the whole shebang I gave him a total cows milk bottle to see what he would do and he just swallowed it down without batting an eyelid - I was not expecting that.

So maybe try it and see what he does - could save you some faff! Grin

As for the mixing, so long as the formula part is made up with the right formula/water ratio you could top it up to whatever he needs with the cows.

Make sure it is whole milk though and not semi-skimmed. When the fat is reduced for semi or full skimmed some fat soluble vitamins are also lost which your baby needs. You probably knew that though. :)

We were a semi house before but even full fat is only 4% fat which is less than many foods so no problem and we have got used to it now. We don't use enough to have two types in stock.

Gin (love the name BTW!) I am giving him full fat and organic Wink. Found that sainsbos do a 2 for £3 offer on 4 pinters - so I got one full fat and another semi for DH and I. We are cereal monsters so plough through milk.

Quite a bit cheaper than the £9 Shock I have been nailing every week on formla...!
