Hi ladies - just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a breast feeding pillow for a large breasted lady?
Also wondered if anyone had used or what people thought of the Utterly Yours breast pillow? Any help? utterlyyours.com/product.html

Thanks

I had a Widgey and have mammoth bosoms. Have to say I barely used it once I got lazy learned to feed lying down. Also as it raises the babe up quite a bit my nipples were then below the level of his head, such is the effect gravity has on boobs so large! Nowadays if feeding sitting up, I just grab any old cushion, or cross my legs over and put DS on the higher 'side' (if you see what I mean).

I think I'd have used the Widgey a lot more if I had it in the very early days, and it was cheaper in Asda than the one I linked to.

I have a breastfeeding cushion which was given to me, it's a la redoute one. Now it's more for supporting my arms and keeping DD on my lap when she goes to sleep on me all the time. I have southfacing nips so if I laid her on top of it, she couldn't feed anyway. I still have it on my lap as she sort of sleeps inside it like a nest and it keeps me all warm and cosy

I have ginormous boobs and never used one. I used a normal cushion for the first couple of weeks and then just used the crossed legs thing that was described earlier. Xx

JustMeAndMyBaby · 29/03/2012 18:27

I found I didn't need one the cushion made dd to high and latch painful! I just did the crossed legs thing and pretty soon she was just resting on my legs.

I found a theraline pillow useful for pg and bf. TBH I don't think it matters particularly which one you buy. Even a normal bed pillow will be useful if money is tight.

Helen, I had one of those memory foam things like that one you've linked to. I honestly didn't find it helped at all. I find it so frustrating that I have to support my boob to stop it sliding out of poor DS's mouth. I love the idea of something that would stop me having to hold it (hence why I bought that!) but I found that it made everything in the wrong place. I think it made my boob poke out too far and then I had to hold DS out to get him near to latch on.

At the moment with DS2 (3 weeks old) I'm using my big v pillow to support him and, if I'm lucky the boob too, which means I can free at least one hand to drink or read (at night)

With ds1 I never quite resolved it - I was fine with feeding at home (with my big v pillow) but I always struggled when we were out to feed with anything approaching discretion or comfort. Not looking forward to having to feed out again this time around Confused

Just realised this is a pillow that goes under your boobs. BF support at hosp tried me to use rolled up muslins. This stopped me feeding first DC and I was determined to feed DC2 without all this faff so Could feed in public.

I use what I think is called the sandwich technique. Google you tube for vids- amazingly loads of helpful tips on there!

As for a pillow after 2 v pillows I've just treated myself to a widgey pillow from Asda. Money well spent!

lagoonhaze · 29/03/2012 20:55

Biscuitsandtea- it gets easier!

Biscuitsandtea · 29/03/2012 21:00

On reflection with ds1 it probably didn't help that he fed for about 40 mins on each side so was pretty uncomfortable to sit in one position for that long Hmm

Oh, and I tried this sandwich thing the other week with ds1 but my boob was actually too big to be able to squash it with one hand Blush and it didn't help DS (bless him). My boobs are super enormous though at a J / K ish cup Confused

Can I ask about the widget pillow - do you just rest the baby on it? What do you do about holding your boob (if you need to?)

And how much was it in Asda?

Cheers Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 29/03/2012 21:02

Widget = widgey = stooopid autocorrect

Although I now have that old John Smiths advert song in my head. 'Widget, it's got a widget....'

MadderHat · 29/03/2012 21:09

I just rest baby (or 18 month old, now) on it, and support (rather droopy - due to size, not feeding) boob with near hand, put elbow/arm over baby and hold my book in the free hand. Providing my feet are supported so my lap isn't downwards, we're all fine. I dislike feeding without a cushion and back support - if I have to, I cross my legs and sit on the floor to feed cushionless. Never did get the hang of feeding lying down - can't manage to read!

lagoonhaze · 29/03/2012 21:09

You can use the widgey in two ways - put it into waist or on side. I use it on my side when on sofa, chair or crossed legged. Because it's so firm baby doesn't drop down during feed. At 3 weeks your baby will probably rest well on it. I hold my baby with hand from side Im
Feeding on. Unhook bra with opposite hand and then change hands to squish boob on.

lagoonhaze · 29/03/2012 21:10

Now I want a John smiths! Don't even drink beer!

lagoonhaze · 29/03/2012 21:12

£20'in asda. I added another £5 worth of stuff for free delivery instore

Biscuitsandtea · 29/03/2012 21:18

Madder DS would need to be able to support his own head for that to work I guess? I wonder if that is how I used to do it with ds1 in the later months? I am sure I ditched the v cushion eventually and I definitely used to read!

AnitaBlake · 30/03/2012 06:32

I never really used anything, in the early days I did use a normal pillow, then we just used a crossed knee and still do at 16m! I found the V cushion much more use when I was pg!

Glimmerberry · 30/03/2012 06:42

I have big mamms...a widgey pillow worked well, plus a pair of rolled socks under my boob. In the early days I was a permanent fixture on the sofa with DS lying on the widgey either feeding or napping. He now uses the widgey for a bit of support sitting up.

MadderHat · 30/03/2012 07:36

Biscuits: DD always just rests her head on the widgey cushion, even when small. She usually fell asleep when getting to the end of the feed. The widgey cushion is supportive enough. Unlike adults, the relative width of baby's head and shoulders means there isn't a huge sideways tip and so the straight line of the throat is maintained.
