If you read the other thread about best friends grandson (6 days old) feeding 45 mins on each breast.

Said friend has just rung me cos her dd is worried about her new ds doing squirty poos (projectile is the word she used!) seems to have done runny poos (and squirting over here!) all day today and she's worried about dehydration. She rang the midwives who told her to monitor him. I said I'm sure he'll be fine but if any of you have experience of this maybe you can help? Is this normal for breast fed baby?
god I feel really thick!

Squirty poos are normal with breastfed babies. I think their poos tend to be more runny than bottlefed babies.

TOTALLY normal! When you actually see in happening without a nappy it's like runny yellow paint being squirted out of a tube!!! (In my experience!!)

oh good she'll be relieved - I can't ring till tomorrow they've gone to bed!

why didn't the midwife tell her that?!

Midwives are going to say "monitor the baby". The baby is new, they're all a bit strange.

That being said, if he's pooing a few times a day, he's getting a good amount of breastmilk.

Both my dds do projectile poos. In fact, I have had to change cot bedding before now when poo "prpjected" right across the changing table and on to the cot (about 4 foot from bottom to impact zone).
Bf poo is very runny and usually mustardy yellow. Diarrhoea in bf babies is rare. When it occurs it is, I believe, green and also foul smelling.

normal normal normal
Friends took photos (ugh).
Talk about blackmail material when that baby becomes a teenager.

dd caught dh and dm with the projectile poo. its totally normal and can be quite entertaining if the right person gets caught tehee

This reminds me of when I was in hospital having just had ds2. There was only me and one other girl in the maternity unit and she was just about to go home. Her dh/dp kicked up an awful stink, being rude to the midwives and insisting on having his baby examined again by a doctor, etc because he was convinced there was something wrong. In the end, it emerged that what was worrying him was the fact that the baby had had a runny yellow poo. I could hardly keep a straight face listening to the midwife calmly explaining to him that this really was completely normal (presumably it was baby's first proper poo after the meconium).

JT - sounds normal to me too.

Sorry, but what colour is it ? I used to compare it to a turmeric / curry yellow colour Sorry, don't want to put you off your dinner !

If that is the sort of colour, that sound fine to me.

If the baby is getting adequate breastmilk and nothing else, no need to worry about dehydration.

Also it is unusual for an exclusive bf baby to have diarreah or constipation. Mine never ever suffers from either even now as toddler. BM is very easy to digest for a baby.
