best friends dd1 has just had first baby (boy and although not breastfed herself has decided that's what she wants to do . Apparently he went straight on to her breast and sucked away merrily. Now she's home and in agony the midwife has told her to feed him 45 minutes on each side - that sounds excessive to me but I never breastfed so thought I'd ask the founts of all knowledge

is that a lot?

dd is another sleepy feeder. She could easily feed for 45 mins, sometimes over an hour. She would feed, fall asleep latched on. If I tried to remove her, she would wake, root and bring on another let down. And so on. If I tried to unlatch her whilst she was asleep, she would cry and I thought she was still hungry and feeding and so put her on again. Took me months to cotton on to the fact that she was just wanting to sleep with the boob in her mouth.

But dd was always a gentle feeder with a good latch. So I never had problems with cracked nipples and could go on for as long as she wanted. Don't see anything wrong with comfort feeding, if you can create the time to indulge.

Honestly Jools, your friend does need to see someone who can see her and knows what she is talking about - ie at a breastfeeding cafe or a hospital breastfeeding clinic. The atmosphere is very supportive and the tiniest tweak can make a HUGE difference. I know, I've been there!

ditto aloha. i was in agony by 3rd day . thank god i was still in hospital and a midwife showed my the smallest way dd was latching on incorrectly and the pain disappeared instantaneously. it was such a relief.
