I think my toddler has weaned, but how long before the milk dries up?

DS is 16mo and had gradually been reducing his feeds and had been having just one feed in the early hours of the morning. He had his last feed four and a half days ago. I've tried to do a 'don't offer don't refuse' approach, which seems to be working. If I offered, I'm sure he'd feed, but he doesn't seem distressed at not having any milk (he used to pull at my top when he wanted to feed but either hasn't done this or if he has he's been satisfied with solid food).

I assumed that as I was only feeding him once a day I wouldn't have much milk left; however, I seem to have filled up with five days' worth of milk which is getting a bit uncomfortable! I'm just wondering how long it is likely to take to dry up, or whether I should express a little to ease the discomfort. (I hate expressing).

I was in two minds about weaning him and was almost tempted to start feeding again - the main reason I decided to wean was so I could get my periods back, having not had one since he was born, as the biological clock is ticking.

It does sound like he has weaned, but there is no need to wean to get your fertility back as many of the Mners on here, including me will testify Smile.

As for your milk, you could always just express a little for your own comfort. Can you hand express?

Thanks JiltedJohnsJulie - can I ask how old your DC was when your period returned?
I caved in this morning as DS seemed to want a feed and I was in such discomfort.

Think they were around 18 months both times, though it could have been a little earlier. From seeing threads on here I think that is pretty average and I have got pg whilst bfing twice so it can be done Smile.

Kellymom has some great info on bfing and fertility here Smile
