can anyone remind me of the law re: reduced price formula marketing?

not sure what key words I need to google, so can't find it anywhere Confused

I was in the supermarket today and saw some SMA 1st milk half price on the reduced goods shelf, so took it to customer services and said 'I'm not sure if this is in breach of UK codes on the promotion of breast milk substitutes, but could you possibly check?' or (polite) words to that effect. DH thinks I was being melodramatic and OTT, I am not sure and am worried I've made an arse of myself :o (luckily am very pg, so can get away with being melodramatic and OTT :o)

can anyone help?

thanks :)

I am pretty sure you are correct

my CO-OP currently has aptimal 2 cartons on the nearly out of date reduced stuff shelf BUT they are not reduced at all. (yes i checked and would have spoken to the manager if they were, but they wernt)

thisisyesterday · 23/03/2012 20:36

you are right. first milk is not allowed to be reduced.

SecretNutellaFix · 23/03/2012 20:36

Any price reductions for formula milk suitable from birth is not allowed, as it is a breastmilk substitute.

StealthPolarBear · 23/03/2012 20:37

It can be reduced but has to be a long term (i.e. permanent) price reduction, rather than a short term marketing ploy. So the "reduced" bin is illegal afaik

usualsuspect · 23/03/2012 20:37

OH noes, we can't have the ff getting a bargain can we.

Did you feel all righteous and smug?

upahill · 23/03/2012 20:38

I think you are right but I couldn't be arsed enough to say anything about it or care tbh!!!

upahill · 23/03/2012 20:39

What did they say to you (apart from mutter FFS!! in their head!) Grin

SecretNutellaFix · 23/03/2012 20:40

why are you being so pissy, usual?

It is the lawmakers that have decreed which can have discount applied, not the OP, so why the vitriol?

usualsuspect · 23/03/2012 20:41

Because I wouldn't give a toss if it had been reduced, I certainly wouldn't go and tell the manager.

SecretNutellaFix · 23/03/2012 20:45

Even though it means a fine if trading standards discover it, rather than a member of the public?

SunflowersSmile · 23/03/2012 20:46

I would have 'let it go' if I had been switched on enough to notice. Formular is expensive- let someone get a bargain.

CornishKK · 23/03/2012 20:48

What usualsuspect said. Melodramatic, OTT and odd.

Kveta · 23/03/2012 21:09

thanks :)

I never quite get why discounted formula is a big deal??

If you're going to FF you're going to FF IMO - it's expensive, but so are fags and booze and it doesn't put people off buying them. Cheap offers on formula would be welcome to people who already buy it but I can't see how it would entice people who didn't Confused

TheDetective · 23/03/2012 21:21

You were right OP, and did the right thing :)

Kveta · 23/03/2012 21:35

The woman said she would look into the matter, so obviously I left it at that.

Ds had sma when he was little BTW, am not anti formula... Just thought it was against the law to reduce the price of 1st milk in the UK, so asked someone to check.

usualsuspect · 23/03/2012 21:38

Sorry for being mardy

SecretNutellaFix · 23/03/2012 21:48

that's ok usual.
