What's your b feed / solids routine for older baby?

I realise I have let my dd replace b feeds with solids - partly to fit in with my 3 year old. She eats solids at the same time as him and is very enthusiastic. She has milk at night and first thing in the morning and last thing at night and I try and squeeze in a mid morning feed and an afternoon one - but if the solids were a bit enthusiastically eaten she sometimes won't drink much....

I want to get her drinking much more and realise I need to offer milk an hour before solids but this doesn't always fit with my busy 3 year old.....

If I feed first thing,
Breakfast an hour later
Feed after her morning nap
Lunch an hour or two later
Feed after next nap
Supper at 5
And bedtime feed

Is she getting enough breast milk?

Getting a bit twitchy about it all as I think so far she has replaced breast ilk too much......

How old is your baby?

HappyCamel · 23/03/2012 18:22

Generally I'd say let your baby do what she wants. Dd will sometimes push her breakfast away after only a bit and crawl on my lap an hour later for milk. Other days she'll eat a big breakfast and not want milk until 4ish. The closer she is to one the less you need to worry.

Fevrier · 23/03/2012 18:24

Oh she's only 7.5 months which is why I worry....

She was ebf til 6 months and only took to solids about 3 weeks ago!

At 7.5 I'd be offering 3 meals a day at roughly 9 months I'd add in a morning and afternoon snack. Try BLW so she eats to her appetite rather than absent mindedly eating too much.

Fevrier · 23/03/2012 18:59

Yes we're doing blw.. Or rather she is.

But when would you offer milk? Besides first and last thing?

Well it's difficult for me to say cos I'm totally baby led (only have dd) and she feeds twice a night and doesn't go to bed until 2200. But generally I was feeding roughly,

0130
0430
0730 (dd gets up at 0900)
Breakfast at 0915
1130
Lunch at 1300
1630
Dinner at 2000
2130
Asleep by 2200

Thank you

We don't have a set routine either, BF always on demand. I used to always BF DD2 before meals so that solid food was just a new experience for her rather than a meal IYSWIM.

UntamedShrew · 24/03/2012 18:45

I've looked back in my DTs' baby diary for you - and as a refresher for me as I've a 4 month old now too so not far off the whole weaning thing.

At 7 months we were doing roughly

7am BF
8.30 breakfast
12 lunch
3pm BF (I introduced formula here at 9 months so just 2 feeds a day from me then)
5pm dinner
6.30pm BF

And they were thriving so I guess this was what they needed. HTH

How kind. So I think I am along the right lines if I make sure befeedin is follower closely by solids rather than the other way around.

That's what I did with my son but as he was greedier for milk so I didn't worry.

The sleep deprivation is making me anxious, I think!

my DD is 6m and a week... her routine is pretty much the same

7ish BF
8ish Breakfast (porridge with breast milk)
11is BF
12ish Lunch
3.15ish BF
4.30ish tea (pudding = babyrice made with BM that she loves!)
6.45isg BF then to bed and (normally) sleep through

GodisaDj · 24/03/2012 22:20

Same as the others, my dd (7.5 months) is demand led bf and BLW since 6 months, so this is definitely a rough idea of our day:

1am bf
3am bf
5.30 ish bf
7-7.30am wakes around little bf feed
9am ish breakfast
11.30am bf
12.30pm lunch
2/3pm bf
5.30pm bf
6.30pm dinner
8pm bf

Throw teething in to the equation and add another 3 feeds at night GrinSad!

Thanks everyone - more on track now with the b feeding (and plenty at night too w teething also)......
