What size teat for a mainly breastfed 10mth old?

Dd needs to start getting the occasional bottle, she seems fine with it so far but takes ages, I wondered if I should be giving her a faster flow teat? I just used number 1 size (Tommy tipee) as that is what we had in the house. Thanks!

Dd never had a bottle. When she began weaning she drank water out of a free-flowing lidded cup. At 10 months I would give cows milk rather than formula anyway if diet is reasonable and still bfing.

No, course not otherwise babies wouldn't be able to have cereals, yoghurt, cheese sauce or rice pudding etc.

Cow's milk should not be the main drink, but if a baby is primarily BF then by 10 months there is no need to introduce formula and bottles - cows milk in a cup is an easier, cheaper and perfectly nutritionally valid thing to do.

The reason the guidance says no until 1 year, is to stop parents whose babies are formula fed switching them onto cow's milk entirely too soon - because it is so much cheaper and easier than formula.

StarlightDicKenzie · 21/03/2012 23:33

The concern is that it replaces bm or fortified formula as a main source of nutriton. This is not so in the OP's case. An 'occasional' bottle as she mentioned IS only a smaLl amount.

We use variflow tommee tippee closer to nature, the boy seems to get on with them just fine.

Thanks all! I prefer a bottle for the "sleepy" aspect as you say above; if dh has her then it helps him get her down for a nap or to bed. When I go back to work the bottles will be more regular so I prefer to use formula rather than cows milk at the mo! She does have the odd sippy cup of cows milk though as she shouts for it when dd1 has a drink of milk!
So a no.1 teat should be fine then? It seems very slow compared to my squirty boobs!

Maybe try a number 2 size, to see how she gets on? We give my bf 6 month old an occasional bottle & she gets frustrated if the flow is too slow.

If you try it & she splutters & is uncomfortable, you can always go back to using number 1s.

I have asked the same questions re cows milk for a ebf baby. I came away with the same conclusions. Its ok to give it as a drink to my then 10mo was ok. She drinks it from a TT free flow cup.

The problem with cows milk is that it's salty and not the same as formula nutrition wise. The volume they are talking about are like 500ml thereabouts. DD takes maybe 20-30ml from the cup at nursery. She still has at least 3 bf a day.

By the way DD did have bottles and we were using newborn teats from NUK.
