BLW baby dropping milk v fast

she is 7.5 months and will feed first thing and last thing and twice at night but may or may not have mid morning or afternoon feeds... She loves her solids and eats a range of food..

Is this enough breastmilk?

My son was so much suckier and took all milk offered. Bit concerned.

O and I am trying (when practical) to offer feeds before a nap to take advantage of an emotional / sleepy feed....

Well we're not doing BLW so a bit different but my 7 month old DS sounds about the same! He has a good morning feed and night feed, then 2 or three overnight. Sometimes he'll have a feed during the day and sometimes he won''t!

nannyl · 21/03/2012 18:34

my DD is only 6m old

she has 4 feed per 24 hours (between 7am / 6.30pm), and none at night

It has never occured to me that these 4 feeds are not enough

we do a mix of BLW and purees (and often compromise with puree on bread as after a few spoon fuls she wants to do it herself)

Really? But are you breastfeeding nannyl? Because i am sure a full breastfeed is nowhere near being the same as a bottle of milk - probably only 4oz. Less maybe.

yes im bfing

she has never had any other milk Smile

Fevrier · 21/03/2012 19:28

But obviously I would prefer 4 in the day than 2 at night and 2 in the day! But she won't take any more......

Are you giving her any water?

Fevrier · 21/03/2012 20:43

She drinks water with her food. She likes it. I offer the breast between meals and after solids but because she is feeding herself I can't really control how much she eats - it's all a bit frantic as she stuffs herself and then screams to get down or screams for more.... Sometimes she will refuse a breastfeed and yet eats solids.....

It seems too little to me - just compared with my son. But he was sucky and loved breastfeeding.

She has never breastfed for comfort (except at night) and when exclusively breastfed would space it out a lot,.. So I just think she is not hungry enough for milk between meals.

Saying this I should probably try and do solids and milk together?

To add to the mix that she gets v distracted and annoyed if I try to b feed her when she wants to see things. And I have an interesting toddler so she prefers to smile / screech / watch him than feed from me!

Erm my DD is 9 months so I'm no expert, but I was told not to give water until 8 months, and then only the odd sip with food to get them used to cups. Maybe she is drinking too much?

I always offer a bf before any solids, then I know she is getting enough milk. Food is supposed to complement the milk, milk is supposed to be the main nutrient source until they are about 1. As I understand it.

My now 10mth old was exactly like that from about 6-9mths. While she still can't get enOugh solids, she is also looking for bf 2-3 times a day during the day. It was as if the initial novelty of blw was all too much! She would fight me if I tried to bf in the day, even bite on one or two memorable occasions! But now she looks for a feed, esp mid/late afternoon and I am much happier about the amount of milk she's getting overall.

Fevrier · 21/03/2012 22:19

Yes exactly - she devours new food but spurns stuff she has already tried.... Got to slow her down.

She's awake Now and won't settle so maybe sore tummy from overdoing it with the BLW....
