Manual breast pump

I am going away for 3 days/ 2 nights next week and DS2 (19 months) will be looked after by granny. Although he still breastfeeds frequently, he has no problem without feeding when I'm not there (I also work part-time and have been away for a night before without him).
However, I seem to have lost my electric breast pump and I know that if I can't express when I'm away I'm going to be in total agony a bit uncomfortable.
I no longer express regularly as my body has got used to not feeding when I'm working, so I don't need a fancy electric pump, but would like to buy a manual one - any recommendations?

Hello!

We've noticed that this thread is quite old and thought it might be useful to point you in the direction of our breast pump reviews page which has some useful advice on the best manual, electric and double breast pumps on the market right now.

Hope that helps! Flowers

Why don't you try hand expressing, tis free and I'm told by people who've used manual pumps that manuals are no quicker/easier than doing it by hand.

I use a manual avent one. Works well for me, easy to take apart and easy to clean.

Another vote for the Avent one. I had a Nuby one too (freebie from their Facebook page) and it was crap, couldn't get anything out but the Avent one was just as effective as my electric Medela one, it just made my hand ache after a while!

I've got an Avent manual one too. Fairly cheap, easy to put together and take apart. Definitely recommend too Smile

Another vote for hand expressing hear, you woun't need to strealies it and can take it anywhere Wink

I've found it just as efficent as a manual pump if not better. The BfN have a leflet with some info on hand expressing www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/BFNExpressing&Storing.pdf and i'm sure if you google it you'd find some video's to watch as well.

I like the avent one. I had to hand express in work last week as I left part of the pump at home; it was much more difficult by hand!

The first time I was away overnight a couple of weeks ago (ds is also 19mo), I hand expressed. It was a bit of a nightmare as although i got a lot out, the stimulation made it worse. I had to get up about 3 times to express in the night and ended up getting the train home early in the second day.

This week I was away again and took the avent pump. 1 session before bed and

The first time I was away overnight a couple of weeks ago (ds is also 19mo), I hand expressed. I thought it would be fine as I had used hand expressing for food etc when we were starting with solids. It was a bit of a nightmare as although i got a lot out, the stimulation made it worse. I had to get up about 3 times to express in the night and ended up getting the train home early in the second day.

This week I was away again and took the avent manual pump. 1 session before bed and one at 6am, and I was much more comfortable. I had to have a quick go in the station loo half way home too which was easier with the pump than by hand.

Reckon I pumped and dumped more than a pint!

I have two breast pumps and would also recommend the Avent one. I find that it is faster than hand expressing.

I have the Tommy Tippee manual one, its pretty good and has a large breast shield for well-endowed ladies! I also have a hospital grade double electric which I use a couple of times a day and although its quicker if doing both breasts it is not that much quicker than the TT manual one if just doing one boob.

Thanks everyone. Manual expressing doesn't seem to work too well with me,not sure why!

I also use the manual Avent and get on well with it. Have recently bought the Boots own brand manual pump (was away and needed to express) and it's hardly any different, but cost £17!!! Would definitely get that one if I were you.
