Not well - will it affect my milk

I have got this D&V bug that has been going round and haven't been able to eat for a couple of days now, alhtough have been able to drink so have been drinking alot of water. My (usually v. strong) let down seems v. week and last night it took an hour just to express 2 ounces (usully takes 5 mins).

Is my milk going? What can I do to stop that happening?

I've had two bugs in a row and my milk supply did go down, but as long as keep regularly feeding or expressing it should come back normally as soon as you can eat and drink

NotQuiteCockney · 02/02/2006 18:22

How old is your baby? Is their weight gain normally good? Why are you expressing?

If everything else is good, I don't think your supply will be affected by D+V. Are you still suffering from D+V, or are you just lacking in appetite?

Pennies · 02/02/2006 18:24

Baby is 7 weeks.

Expressing so DH can do the late feed.

Still suffering. V. much so

Yes weight gain fine - 8oz a week.

Hmm, when did you last ingest something other than water? I thought 24 hours fasting normally sorted these things?

Have you taken any Dioralyte? It's just sugar and salt in an appropriate mix, so not medicine, so can't do any harm to your little one. D+V can mean you lose essential salts, which then means you can't absorb water and food that you eat, which means you're stuck. Dioralyte can fix that, if that's the problem.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/02/2006 18:50

Your milk supply is probably fine. If it wasn't, your baby would be unhappy, unsettled, and generally really annoyed about it. If she's fine, your supply is fine. Your letdown may be a bit slower, she may have to work a bit harder to get the milk, but it's obviously still coming.

My suggestion of Dioralyte is to try to fix your problem. If you've been fasting for 48 hours, I'd consider seeing your GP tomorrow, as there may be other options? I know Immodium is great with these problems, but I know it's not totally ok for bf.

NQC - thanks for your replies. DH has been forcing me to drink pukey raspberry flavoured diorlyte all day and I fasted for 24 hours. I jsut had a small amount of pasta and veg as an experiment so we'll see how that goes. Am not a fan of imodium - am of the cschool of thought re. better out than in.

Pennies, I agree with you if it's a bug. I sometimes get the D part of D&V for no very good reason (particularly while travelling, or otherwise unable to spend all day on the loo), hence my knowledge of Immodium. I wouldn't take it while BF though, as it's not really necessary, anyway.

Bananas and white toast are both good as first food after a bug. As are apples and plain white rice. How did the pasta suit you?

Pennies · 03/02/2006 19:25

You don't want to know! bleugh.

Oh damn! How long has it been since you kept anything other than water? Has the Dioralyte been staying down?

I would consider going to the doctors at this point, I think. Although I doubt there's much they can do. Well, there is an injection, but I think that's more for when you get stuck throwing up every 20 minutes, for no reason, whether or not you've eaten anything.

Pennies · 03/02/2006 20:43

It's not that bad - only got the D bit of the bug. Am doing Dioralyte big time and will see how it goes over the weekend. Kept DD on the boob pretty much non-stop today to try and boost the supply. It's possible she's on a growth spurt as she was early with her first one (and she was 2 weeks overdue). I'll take her t be weighed next week just to make sure she's OK though.

If this is still happening next week, I'd consider GP or Dioralyte.

I had some tummy bugs in early BF with DS2, and found myself living on white carb, as at least that didn't put more fibre in my gut.

Aloha · 03/02/2006 22:26

No.

Aloha · 03/02/2006 22:26

I mean, you'll be fine. Hope you are better soon.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2006 22:28

Does this look ok? It's based on EZ stuff.

And what is Woolease?

And what is a yoked sweater? If I'm knitting for the boys, I need a big neckhole, as they both have freaky big heads.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2006 22:36

Well, that was on the wrong thread. Sorry.

I hope you feel better soon.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/02/2006 22:37

And I meant GP or Immodium, obviously. Might just be sleeping time for me ...
