How long have you managed to continue to bf just once a day??

So, I'm back at work (not as bad as I thought) and 6mo DS is taking formula during the day (and some solids) and I had the idea that I would be able to carry on BFing once a day (first feed of the day) but there just isn't enough milk. I feed him both sides for about 20mins until he pulls away... then he downs 7oz formula!

I used to express in the evenings but it took so long just to get a couple of ounces, I knocked it on the head. He was exclusive bf until about 5mo then started introducing formula in preparation for work (expressing not an option there).

I have heard that others have managed to continue bfing just once a day for several months. Any advice??

I did for a long time, but that was down from two feeds a day aged one. She dropped down to just mornings around 18 months.

I think it might be more difficult at 6 months as breastfeeding isn't quite as established. Hopefully someone with more information might come along soon.

Wanted to say too, if he's enjoying it and you are, there's no reason to stop, even if you need to/want to supplement alongside. Again, other people might know more about that.

Sorry not to be more help. At least my post will bump you up active convos.

I breastfed on demand whenever I was with my son from 9mo (and worked full-time).

From about a year old, I could just feed once or twice a day without denting my supply. But honestly, before that, I had to feed him several times a night, which did keep the supply up. If I didn't do that, my supply would dip a little.

I'd suggest you can definitely work full time and keep breastfeeding a little but you probably need to feed a few more times in the evening/morning/night to keep up supply for at least another few months.

From a year to 16 months, my son breastfed anything from no times a day to six times a day depending on whether I was around or not, with no effect on supply.

That's my experience anyway.

Pretty much as the previous poster with dd1- returned to work at around 9mths and fed loads before and after work inc overnight and also "full time" at the weekends. From about a year I think it was down to bedtime and morning, then dropped the morning feed, fed at night till 3yrs though!

Thanks all. I see I was probably being naive to think I could sustain by feeding once a day at 6m... Unfortunately he is fast asleep dreaming of bunny rabbits by the time I get home after my 12.5h day... He mostly sleeps through so not keen to wake him (or myself) for night feeds. Maybe I need to start expressing again in the evenings, but I'm just so knackered. I wake him at 6am for our feed and I do really enjoy it, and so does he until he realises his tummy is still empty.

I will feed him more on my days off and, if I get my supply up again, stock up on breast pads for work days. It's strange for me not having enough milk- I had over-supply and leaked and squirted all over the place for 4 months.
