Unusually sicky baby

Beccarollo · 23/11/2003 19:14

Harvey is not usually a sicky baby, hasnt been at all since he was born. Last week or so he has been bringing a bit up after feeds then today he has been repeatedly sick after feeds. Its not curdled or anything just milk coming up after his feed but sometimes 3 or 4 times.

Any comments?

Is there any chance he has become super duper efficient and is taking too much - he doesnt stay on the boob for long, didnt think it would be long enough to take too much!

Becca - my dd breastfed for a total of 5 mins ! And that is all that she needed. He may indeed be eating too much. Any other symptoms? Nappies all right too?

Ghosty · 23/11/2003 19:30

How old is Harvey Beccarollo?

Beccarollo · 23/11/2003 19:32

He is 11 weeks today!!

His nappies have been fine - he has had 2 today and were fine and yellowey but not much of it.

I was v engorged this morning as he is now sleeping 10 - 12 solid hours at night (woooooooohooooooooo) so his first feed I think he may have taken alot of foremilk. The milk was spraying out of my boob before I even got near him!!

I asked because my DS was a very sicky baby ... he had a condition called Pyloric Stenosis that needed an op - but don't worry, I think 11 weeks is too old for this condition to manifest itself ... DS was 4 weeks and usually they are about 6 weeks when it is discovered.
They have to be projectile vomiting too ... not just being 'sicky' iykwim ...
I can't think what it can be that is bothering your DS ... have you taken him to the doctor?

pupuce · 23/11/2003 19:39

How much milk??? It always looks worse than it is.... do you think more than say 2 tablespoons?
He is NOT projectile vomitting.... sounds like a surplus to me

ANGELMOTHER · 23/11/2003 19:40

Wow Becca you sure got the nights sorted lucky thing
I'm no expert but would it help to express some before he feeds if it's coming so freely maybe he is getting a lot coming at him so quickly. If he's sleeping so well and nappies are regular there can't be much your doing wrong though

Beccarollo · 23/11/2003 19:55

Nope its definitely not projectile, most times I dont notice until realise its all down my back/down his front/dribbling off his chin! It does seem like a lot but I would say that there was a fair bit more than usual posseting - after his lunch time feed he was sick about 8 times!

Ill see how he is tomorrow, he is fine in himself except maybe a new cold starting, he might be mucousy.

Angelmother, I sent you my email addy, did you get it?

Becca

It could be reflux, that's where a valve at the top of the stomach does not close properly and they bring back milk after feeds. My son seemed to develop it at about 7 weeks and it just seems to be geting better now at 27 weeks.

I dont think its overly serious and they usually grow out of it, but it did lead to quite poor weight gain for my little one until he went onto solids

Beccarollo · 23/11/2003 20:02

Could it be reflux eek never considered that - can it start at this stage? 11 weeks? I thought it was something they had or they didnt not something they developed!

Oohh I hope not, dont they cry with that?

OP posts:
Ghosty · 23/11/2003 20:46

I think that reflux comes with quite a bit of discomfort and distress doesn't it?
Definitely sounds like he is taking a bit much ...

Beccarollo · 23/11/2003 20:46

Hope he is just being a little greedy boy!!

I just had a thought, my sister looking after him for a few hours on Saturday, I didnt have any stocks of EBM so told her to get a carton of formula if he was desperate for a feed (me presuming she knew he had SMA gold if he ever has formula) - she bought SMA white - he had 5oz of it on Saturday afternoon, would a reaction to this manifest itself as sickness for over 24 hours later? Hes just a nappy that was very orange and much thicker than his usual too.

Beccarollo · 24/11/2003 09:45

Forgot to say - it was quite scary last night, he went to bed at 7pm so was last fed at about 6.30 and at 1.30am he was sick alot, vomited all over his face, head and bed - he was lying in a pool of it, lucky I was woken up straight away as I had to turn him over to let the rest come out.

OP posts:
Beccarollo · 24/11/2003 12:27

This is doing my head in now! He is just having little sicks constantly! Any other ideas?

Ds had gastic reflux, which was quite spectacular on times. He would happily 'throw' several feet. He would throw up all of his last feed, at least 12 nights out of 14. In the end we gave him paediatiric Gavescon, and that helped a bit. He was better once he was on solids, but can still puke for the first team!

He never had any problem with all of this, was never upset when he vomited Dh and I became quite a team, and our carpets will never be the same again. He never had growth problems, and is now a thumping great big 3.5 year old.

Beccarollo · 24/11/2003 16:17

he has continued having little episodes of sick all day but just now he has been hugely sick, all over himself, all over me, the floor and the sofa. It gave me a bit of a fright, wonder if its a bug.

Do I still feed him as normal?

OP posts:
ANGELMOTHER · 24/11/2003 23:40

Becca it might well have been the formula. I had blue cheese a week ago and from that evening till two days later we were only back to normal. She was grumbly and bringing back milk constantly. The little she did bring up was curdled though............oh you have me worried now, bring him to doc's if he's still the same in the morning.

Beccarollo · 25/11/2003 09:05

Posted this here as well as sep babies encase no one sees it.

Hi

Thanks for the messages peeps - I rang nhs direct last night and they said to keep an eye and bring him in if he got hot, listless, constant vomiting or if diaroreah started and he wasnt feeding.

He has been ok overnight - he went to bed at 6.30pm and went through til 5am, had a feed, brought it up, went back to sleep woke up at 8.45, had a feed, brought some of it and is now kicking on his mat!

Not sure what to do now, he is obviously not desperately ill after sleeping such a spell without being sick but the problem is still there, I hope its not just something we have to live with now as Im permanently stinking of sick and so is he!

Oh and when I changed his nappy (he still hasnt had a dirty one, there looked to be a tiny patch of blood in it?!! Any thoughts???

Bekki · 25/11/2003 10:04

My ds1 was very sicky,he was a very big baby and fed quite a bit. It was just something that we had to put up with, including the 20-25 bib changes in a day! He didn't stop vomiting until he was 15 months. We went around smelling of sick as well. I didn't notice it after a while and I had to wear different clothes to wear indoors so I didn't go out in sicky clothes.

I'm glad to hear that you feel hes o.k. I'm not sure about the blood thing. Ds2 sometimes gets a little red patch in his poo but only very tiny. I assumed it was something to do with different things that I was eating.

Beccarollo · 25/11/2003 10:05

When it happened to DS Bekki did it happen from birth or just suddenly started? Harvey has been very UNsicky baby until 11 weeks - could this just be the new him?!

OP posts:
LIZS · 25/11/2003 10:21

Is Harvey getting more mobile which could prompt his tummy to be a bit more unsettled. does he have a cold ? It doesn't sound like reflux to me if he has otherwise been contented until now, could he have more wind than previously if he is snacking? Spot of red in nappy could indicate a uti but there would normally be fever etc with it.

Glad he seems a bit better.

Bekki · 25/11/2003 10:40

I think ds1 started being constantly sick when he was 2 months old. Lets hope it passes in time. It might be like Lizs says being more mobile. Don't worry about it too much, as long as he is happy. The only I could suggest would be to offer him less milk. Because it does sound like over-eating. Although from experience I know trying to cut back feeds from a greedy baby is almost impossible.

Beccarollo · 01/12/2003 14:40

Dragging this up again as its really doing my head in!! We both stink all the time of baby sick - it looks quite mucousy sometimes although he hasnt got a cold and seems fine in himself - not sure if is overeating as he is crying for another feed a couple of hours later (growth spurt) yet still bringing some up, surely if he was overeating to the point that he was taking too much he would have enough in him to see him through a few hours!

I thought you couldnt overfeed a BF baby - is that rubbish?

Bekki/Becca
You could both be talking about my DD who is nearly 3. Tried everything, breast/bottle but still sick everywhere for 18 months. As a result of trial and error (the docs/hvs were useless) have finally realised that it was cows milk causing this. She now has these lovely Soya drinks and rice milk (from Waitrose) and no longer has a problem. How about cutting out milk or even diary products from your diet Becca and see how it goes. I know you'd try anything at this stage. Good luck.
