Ow! Painful breast, not mastitis, please help!

I've had mastitis and whilst this has some similarity my breast doesn't feel hot, there are no red or lumpy patches and it's emptied regularly! I'm also feeking fine in myself.
However my right breast feels very tender and bruised in the centre, deep in the breast just around the nipple area. It's worse when palpated.

I'm 9 weeks pp, ebf my ds who feeds like a trooper every 1 - 2 hours during the day and ever 3 hours max at night. Not sure what cab be causing this discomfort as it doesn't seem to have any similarity to mastitis except for the tenderness and of course it is now the weekend and I won't be able to see the gp until monday. Any advice?

Other than keeping an eye out for more mastitis symptoms, and keeping as you're doing...err, heat? Try a heat compress. If it's a blocked duct then this can help.
Other than that, see the doctor and ask for a referal to a breast clinic, or at least for an ulstrsound..they can usually see blocked/narrow ducts on the ulrasound and can thus treat.

Oh, and if you do get any more symptoms, then mastitis is counted as an urgent illness and thus yes, A&E/NHS direct (if they say "urgent cases only" it counts - bloody hell it counts!).
Ohh, just thinking, could it be thrush? No white discarge? That can cause duct swelling apparently.

TruthSweet · 16/03/2012 18:27

Could be a plugged duct (can often precede a bout of mastitis so symptoms can feel similar).

Lots of self help tips and info here.

If it does progress to mastitis, you may need anti-biotics but as not all mastitis is caused by bacterial infection (some cases are caused by plugs/allergic reactions/damage to the ducts/etc) not all will be resolved by anti-biotics (and anti-biotics can lead to a thrush infection as the beneficial bacteria's protection is stripped away [this depends on how broad a spectrum the anti-biotic prescribed is] which you don't want when you are dealing with mastitis).

Well i'm prioritising that breast in faffing and it is less tender when empty. I rang the mw unit and they said sometimes when your milk increases it can engage more milk ducts which can feel sore, so yup, feed feed feed, apply heat and keep a very watchful eye out. Sigh.

Feeding, not faffing
Obviously

Hi makescakes, we've met in other threads! I'm no expert on bf but I'm in similar situation i.e. bf going well but deep pain in one breast at times. I've tried to improve the latch and found it's less tender. Have you had any RL help yet and can you get an expert to observe you? If money is not a problem for you, you could try to find a lactation consultant near you and try to see them this weekend. It could be engorgement or poor latch or both.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 17/03/2012 03:33

Def not poor latch unless something has changed massively. We had help early on from the bf coordinator for the area and thanks to her we got position and latch all sorted, plus my nipple isn't raw at all...

Bah, it's uncomfortable to feed now, but feels so much better after. Thank goodness for my hungry boy!

I'm the same (but left boob :) )
I expressed after feed yest to make sure empty, massaged in shower/heat etc.
No others symptoms and cant see any signs but I was thinkin thrush?? It's sore that's all I know for sure!!!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 18/03/2012 04:48

I thought there was discharge with thrush...?

The pain is easing a little now - feels so much better when breast is empty.
