reflux or tummy valve?

x6bec · 15/03/2012 23:57

Going to drs tomorrow as advised by hv as ds has reflux (quite bad) and is not following centile. He was born on 50th and now on 9th. I was hoping to eliminate this stomach valve thing? Can somebody enlighten me? As long as I get that ruled out I'm happy to accept the fact he has reflux and I have to deal with it, as so many people keep telling me. He is dc2 so don't feel neurotic about this thanks

I don't understand your question. As I understood it, reflux in babies is caused because the muscle at the top of the stomach is not mature/strong enough and allows the contents of the stomach to travel up into the throat.

There are several types of reflux - silent, acid and the one where the valve just isn't doing its job (which is the type my DD has). Have a good chat with the doctor and let us know how you get on.

FWIW most kids with reflux grow out of it by 6 months.

Good luck Smile

Are you talking about Pyloric stenosis? TBH I'm not sure how they rule this out but its likely you will be referred to a paediatrician if the weight loss is dramatic, which it sounds like it is. If its reflux then there are medications that will help tighten the valve at the top of the stomach. Hopefully you can get an urgent referral.

I don't think most children grow out of reflux by six months, especially in more severe cases - some may, but more often its when they're walking.

Hi, DS2 had Pyeloric Stenosis when he was 5 weeks old. How old is your DS?

x6bec · 16/03/2012 09:31

Yes it is pyeloric stenosis that I am talking about didn't know the name. I've heard some have to have operation? How does this get diagnosed? Do they have scan? Ds is 16 weeks old.

My DS has acid reflux. He has gaviscon in his milk and it's all but stopped. I'm
Dreading not using gaviscon Sad

x6bec · 16/03/2012 09:48

We tried gaviscon and it did nothing but make ds constipated he is also on sma staydown milk which doesn't help much either which is why I think it may be pyeloric stanosis?

OP posts:
LST · 16/03/2012 09:49

The doctor did say it could lead to constipation. Sad

x6bec · 16/03/2012 10:04

I found sma staydown better than gaviscon so if ds does get constipated you may want to try that

I thought that Pyeloric Stenosis was in babies younger than 16 weeks. DS could literally keep nothing down at all, and his fontanelle sunk. They did an ultrasound to diagnose, while he drank water-you could see it wasn't going anywhere.

x6bec · 16/03/2012 19:48

Well have now been prescribed ranitidine so fingers crossed. Apparently pyeloric stenosis is usually in babies around 4 weeks and they projectile vomit rather than just bring up milk all the time. Thanks for all your comments

Good luck x6Bec, hope things start to improve for you. x

x6bec · 16/03/2012 20:13

Thank you sparklingbrook how is your baby now? Pyeloric sounds horrendous :-( I thought I had it bad with normal reflux. Dd had colic too, time to stop reproducing now I think lol x

Oh, this was a few years ago x6Bec, he's 9. Grin I remember it very vividly, it was horrible.4 nights in hospital with him being prodded and poked.

He had an op and was back to normal straight away, no projectile vomiting, but he did have colic a few months later.

Remember it won't last forever and do what you can to get through this difficult bit. x

x6bec · 16/03/2012 21:46

I'm hoping it will be ok by 6 months reflux appears to stay around longer than colic :-( I am planning to wean at 17 weeks (a weeks time) and hope this will make him better. Would rather wean than give him drugs lol but he may not be ready so ranitidine may be my saviour. X

My Ds is 6 months. His reflux has hugely improved but he still has it including when he eats solids (we weaned at 4 1/2 months to help). He is lactose intolerant and has prescription formula and Gaviscon. He's still sick but without Gaviscon he does huge vomits. With it he does smaller ones. His paediatrician said if It's not gone by 9 months she's going to do a scan to see exactly what's going on. Before he started the prescription formula he was screaming in pain when he ate and with every vomit but now it's just a laundry/ sticky messy embarrassing problem for me but it doesn't bother him. It makes me reluctant to go to other people's homes though as he tends to chunder on their sofas Blush

x6bec · 17/03/2012 15:42

I know what you mean. Ds always has bib and I always have muslin, I stick to going to friends who also have babies! Were you not given ranitidine??

OP posts:
blondieminx · 17/03/2012 17:44

OP it may also be worth trying domperidone, which has been life changing for us.

Fingers crossed your bubba is one of the majority who grow out of reflux early (my HV told me the 6 month statistic but DD had it still at 18 months... I ended up in tears at the GP cos it was horrible for her being sick all the time and that week alone she'd covered her car seat, buggy and a friends sofa Blush

Hope things get better soon Smile

Iwantcandy · 17/03/2012 22:16

Ranitadine and domperidone didn't work for my Ds as he doesn't have acid reflux

Iwantcandy · 17/03/2012 22:17

Also I was concerned about the side effects and long term consequences of medicating a small baby

maydaychild · 18/03/2012 07:24

Dd threw up everyday, once weaned, it just changed colour.
It stopped the day she walked at 14m

I couldn't complain as I was exactly the same. !

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2012 07:28

I feel for all of you. DS1 is now 12 but he was the sickiest baby ever. All dressed ready to go out then the next minute we were both covered in sick. I used to have to take spare clothes for me and the baby when I went out. (Which I didn't v often)

So when DS2 was born I couldn't believe i had another sicky baby, then he turned out to have Pyeloric Stenosis so we had projectile vomiting. Sad

It is truly crap. I was very Envy of people who had non-sicky babies.

x6bec · 18/03/2012 09:57

Well ds been on ranitidine for 2 days and had 2 bottles today with no sick!! Wow. Fingers crossed

That's great news, make sure you get him weighed often and have his dose upped as it is very weight sensitive.
