Feeding too frequently?

Is it normal for my 6.5 month old to be bf'ing every 3 hours at night and every 1.5-2 hours during the day? I don't have any other friends with babies so don't have anyone to ask. My mum bf (a long time ago) and says I feed her too much. But what else can I do? Oh, and we ate doing blw, so she doesnt really eat any solids, if thats relevant. Thanks in advance.

It's normal, yes....what would not be normal would be to allow your baby to become distressed/hungry/thirsty to comply with what your mum thinks :)

There is a huge spectrum of normal when it comes to the frequency of babies' feeding, especially older babies. Same with adults, actually. Some people have a bottle of water on their desks and they take a swig several times an hour. Other people have a cup of tea at breakfast and then nothing until mid-morning or lunchtime.

What, exactly, is wrong with feeding your baby like this? What does your mum think will happen? :) Your baby is being offered solids, so as time goes on she will take more of these, but she might still bf with the same frequency. If it becomes inconvenient at times, or you leave her with another carer, then as she gets older she will be fine with longer gaps - but unless you are bothered, why rush? :)

She is the same age as mine and we are also doing BLW. It sounds pretty normal to me! My first was the same. :)

As Tiktok says, have a think about whether it is causing you a problem, and if not, and you're happy with things the way they are, you can carry on.
Your mum means well for you and your baby, but in her day they were told things like "six minutes on each side every four hours" and then wondered where their milk supply went!

Enjoy your baby, I know the last 6.5 months has gone so fast for me! :)

Thanks for replying. There's not really a problem. It's a bit annoying at times that I cant go out without her (she refuses expressed milk) but I don't mind really. I'm 21 and first baby so I like to be reassured sometimes. Thanks again Smile

Refusing expressed milk is annoying and my DD does it too! Hey ho, one day... :)

One day... That's what I keep telling myself! Wishful thinking. Smile

Don't worry give her a couple of months and you'll be able to leave her with a snak and cup of water for a couple of hours.

Totaly normal, DD fed every 2hours during the day untill 8months then we could leave her for a bit. We did BLW to.

LittleWaveyLines · 15/03/2012 16:46

Normal. My DD feeds hourly or 2 hourly still and always has done. She's nearly 9 months and only now is starting to not mind if she misses a daytime feed.

shuckleberryfinn · 15/03/2012 16:49

my one year old still feeds like this but take heart, when I have to leave her I can do, all day sometimes, and she's fine with water and food just like any other toddler.

Diamondgirls · 16/03/2012 13:17

Thanks for your replies. It's reassuring to hear DD's not the only one!

My DD is 16 weeks old and eats every couple of hours too during the day. :)

otchayaniye · 16/03/2012 19:36

exactly the same here. feeds about every one to three hours (co-sleep, sling). her sister was the same. she is blw and taking to it well but s ince she is fed to sleep for bedtime and naps, frequency of feeding hasn't appreciably dropped off
