Hi,

New here and after a little advice/help.

I have been bf my dd for almost 14 months (didn't ever think we would get this far) and started weaning a week ago. I have started off by only feeding from one boob in the mornings (still gets two boobs at night) and it seems to be going ok the only problem I have is she does not like cows milk and I am at loss at to what to give her instead. She gets some dairy from her yoghurts and that's about it, she doesn't like cheese either.

What else can I give?

Thanks

Nay

If you express some breast milk and give it in a bottle, you can gradually add a bit more cow's milk to let your DD get used to the taste slowly.

That's what I did when I changed from formula to cow's milk and it worked.

My mum had this problem with my sis many moons ago and used goats milk successfully for a while until sis eventually accepted cows. Maybe worth a go if chitchat suggestion doesn't work? :)

As long as she is having lots of dairy in her diet she doesn't acutaly need cows milk at all. So if she woun't drink it don't worry about it, just make sure her diet is high in dairy.

Try food's with milk sources.

Is there a reasion why you want to wean, the WHO reocmends feeding untill 2years so if you both happy you could carry on.

shreddedmum · 13/03/2012 17:23

boil then cool it, changes the taste!

By the way well done on making it to 14months, you've done a great job.

didn't mean to sound pushing in my last post

Congrats on getting this far! My DS is 15 mos & won't drink cows milk either. He gets a BF in the AM and usually mid-afternoon as well. Doc told us that provided hes still having 2 BFs a day theres no need to worry about gettinghim to drink cows milk. He goes to bed without any milk at all because we found he slept better without that bedtime feed. He does love yogurt and cheese though which helps. It's probably worth googling non-dairy sources of calcium (almonds, greens, broccoli etc.) and trying to load up DDs diet with these. Have you tried soy milk, almond milk etc? Good luck :)

Breast milk is much sweeter than cows milk. I infuse red bush tea, which is caffeine free and makes it taste sweeter. I'm gradually reducing how long I dip the tea bag for.

My son is nearly 16 months and doesn't like cow's milk or follow-on formula. He has 3-4 breastfeeds over a 24-hour period. I just give him a lot of yoghurt and cheese, which he loves.

When weaning my DD onto cow's milk I warmed it first then added a tiny bit of sugar to it (as breastmilk is a bit sweeter than cow's milk). I only needed to add the sugar once, as once she knew that the bottle contained something yummy she was really into it. Give it a go?

My son is 19 months old, is still being breastfed 2/3 times a day, i have tried him on cows milk and follow - on - milk but he won't have it.
Thankfully he loves it in cereal like Ready brek, Weetabix etc and he has lots of yoghurts and loves cheese too.
My health visitor suggested i try blending banana with it, like a smoothie, but he didn't like that either. Oh well.
He's still growing well anyway, so i'm not worried.

I breastfed my ds until he was 14 months and tried relentlessly to give him cows milk, which he always refused. I was sure my son hated cows milk. However, I got really sick and literally couldn't move so my dh had to take over and bottle feed my son cows milk. He cried for about 5 hours solid, and I would have given in, had I been able to move. It was heartbreaking, but after a few hours of screaming he gave in and I never had to breast feed. Im now due with baby no 2 and plan on giving cows milk from 12 months, but will just go out and leave my baby with dad for the night again. I hope my story helps and you could try this? After a while babies get hungry and generally feed on whatever they are given

I tried all of the above and my dd2 now 3 still hates milk. I BF to 18 mths but towards the end it was mostly for comfort. Whenshe was older i tried smoothies even chocolate powder but no joy. My paed ( Italy) said that in 2 teasp of pure parmesan cheese there is a days calcium intake . I use it in cooking , on pasta and of course she has yoghurts, if i am lucky white / cheese sauces/ however she is now going off cheese unless someone from the UK brings over cheese strings !!!!!!!!!!

Hi my DD has just turned one and refuses any sort of milk from a beaker, cup or bottle. As of a week ago she no longer has the one breast feed before bed.

I used to panic about it but when I spoke to the Dr the Dr said not to worry about it and give her things like yoghurt and dairy products etc but to also give her vitamin drops. They smell vile and my DS who is nearly 5 heaves whenever he smells them but she seems to love them!!

(She also has cow's milk in her cereals by the way)
