I've used the avent isis hand one in the past and found it okish. Is the medela swing worth it? What should I look for if buying second hand?

thx

I had the manual Avent and then the Swing - I thought it was great and resold it when I didn't need it.

If buying second hand I would buy a new breastshield and tubing for it.

The swing is fantastic, very comfortable, reasonably quiet too. My sister bought a Tommee tippe one which looked identical to it, but it wasn't half as good at extracting the milk.

I have one I want to get rid of but like swiviling dicks said it does need a new brestshield (I haven't looked at the tubing) . I replaced the breastshield as it degraded between dd1 and dd2 and it needs doing again. The silicone leaches? and gets sticky and grubby, but parts were easy to get hold of and not very expensive iirc.

As for the pump it's great. I was in hospital with dd2 so used hopital grade ones whilst it's not as fab as those with the suck (they have industrial grade suck!) it is adjustable and I loved using it.

PS I'm wanting rid as dd3 (got my dd's confused!) is now 2.9 and only feeding one every few days, and I don't see me needing it again Sad.

I have to disagree with everyone I'm afraid. I bought mine from Morhercare only a few weeks ago and paid £129 for it but I've stopped using it now (only used it 4 or 5 times) because it hurts my nipples even on the lowest setting and my boobs are sore afterwards. I found it good at extracting mill though.

SneakyBiscuitEater · 12/03/2012 14:21

Mine is wonderful. I got it after using an avent manual pump with DS which did the job but for DD1 I treated myself to the swing. It is so much quicker than a manual.

Go to 'express yourself mums' to buy replacement shields etc if you get a second hand one.

I used mine daily for 4 months with DD1 from my return to work and then put it away and it is now in use for DD2 (She was 1 at Christmas and is still having ebm whilst I'm at work so that's a total of well over a year of daily use and it is still going strong.

Personally I would never buy a Medela second hand - and here is why. If you are going to buy second hand, you need a truly closed system really.

pigletmania · 12/03/2012 17:15

I would use this one www.amazon.co.uk/Spectra-3-Electric-Breast-Pump/dp/B000UTUFP6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331572240&sr=8-1. It was recommended to me by another Mumsnetter and its fantastic. Bf did not work for me as ds had to go to hospital and had top ups from a bottle, this has allowed me to keep pumping my milk for him. The suction is terrific. I used the Medela symphony in the hospital, and this one is just as good at drawing out the milk, and the suction is fantastic. I did not find the suction of the symphony as strong as this.

I was going to say exactly the same as secondtimelucky, you shouldn't buy a second hand pump unless its a closed system

pinkypig · 13/03/2012 15:03

Wow thanks for all the replies. Never crossed my mind to worry about getting a second hand one...bummer!
