I took almost 8 month old DS for his first settling in session at nursery this week. He is bf and BLW but I'm happy for him to have the odd bottle of formula as I'm crap at expressing. I was asking how I go about sending it in, and they said I had to provide the powder already measured out, and bottles of boiled, cooled water which they mixed together then put in a bottle warmer.
I enquired how hot the bottle warmer heated the milk up, and mentioned that it has to be more than 70 degrees to kill any bacteria in the powder, to be told "well it's the highest setting so it's quite hot - why, does your son like his milk hot?" - completely missing the point!
I then went and spoke to the nursery manager about it, again mentioning that the water needs to be more than 70 degrees in order to kill bacteria and she said that they would make my sons bottles up with freshly boiled water if I requested that, but I felt like she hadn't listened to my concerns and that their normal formula making procedure would continue.
This is the only issue I've had with the nursery, we saw 3 others and this was the best for us by far. In fact, I saw the other local nurseries making formula up like this and queried it with them on our visit, so it seems to be universal practise locally!
I think I'm going to step up the expressing and send EBM for DS (or ready made formula at a push), but would you say anything else to the nursery? Are there any guidelines I should take in?
