Wine Habit

hi all

My ds is a pretty terrible sleeper and I have resorted to wine in the evenings. It's gone rapidly from one or two a week to one or two a night. DS is nearly 9 months and feeds duringthe night - sometimes as early as 9 pm, sometimes not til 1am. How much harm am I doing him? Do I need to stop?!

Thx

Glasses, not bottles!

I'm feeding a seven month old and haven't drank for 2 months because we had been co-sleeping and I drew the line there. But over Christmas and really since he was born I would have regularly polished off a bottle of wine and fed 2,3,4 hours later. He's fine and I know plenty of people who do it.

No you don't need to stop bf

You blood alcohol level is what passes through your breast milk, which after 2 drinks is about 0.05 percent (depending on body weight), which is a very negligable amount.

Your body takes about 1 hour to metabolise 1 unit of alcohol... for it to be out of your system.

I don't think the amount of alcohol you are having should have any negative effect, although I'm not an expert.

Thanks both. Just what I wanted to hear :)

I wasn't considering stopping bf, just stopping the wine! Now I won't bother :)

My GP told me to drink wine as my 4mo hadn't slept longer than 2 hours at a time since the day she was born. It didn't make her sleep but I was a little more relaxed :)

I would say that for your body's sake have at least one day off a week where you aren't drinking (give your liver a chance to recover) as it isn't good to drink everyday even in lower quantities - but do keep an eye on how many units you are drinking as it isn't good to drink more than 21 units a week and home measures can be a bit more generous than pub measures. Plus daily drinking can have an effect on baby's weight gain and gross motor skill development - something to bear in mind.

Drinking and bfing can mix just fine but not really daily drinking unless you have a much older baby/child who goes a long enough time without bfs to allow all the alcohol out of your system and then there are still the health implications for you too.

Here's what Kellymom.com has to say about bfing and alcohol (evidenced based information).

Hope that didn't sound too preachy!
