Carton Formula - Storage

cratchit · 29/01/2006 18:15

Just moving onto one bottle a day of formula after nearly 8 months BFing - trying to do it tonight for the bed time feed Can't find formula storage details on La Leche or Kellymom, so plese help - urgently!

How long can I keep sterilised bottles with ready made formula in:

  1. The fridge
  2. Outside the fride
  3. In a coolbag.

The carton packaging says I can keep the milk in the fridge in the carton with the corners turned down etc for 24 hours, so clearly no longer than that. Sorry for being thick.

Why are you putting the ready-made formula in a bottle before you need it?

Because

  1. I've got to bath the baby blah and normally move straight form bathroom to bed and feed without faffing around downstairs and leaving DS on his own when he's shageed etv. Just trying to maintain the routine really.
  2. So that everything's just donw! Given that spare time is a rare and precious commodity, the bottles from my steriliser only stay sterilised for three hours, so ideally I'd like to fill them up with the formula now and not have to remember to resterilise all the time.

As you can see I'm the typo queen, but one of them should have been so that everything's just DONE.

But she's eight months old - sterilising's not an issue. Just make sure the bottle's clean, take the bottle and carton upstairs, pour it into the bottle when you're ready and you're away!

misdee · 29/01/2006 18:38

dont bother about steralising at 8months. if she is on the move and eating dirt (or in my dd's case, chewing shoes) then why steralise?

take a clean bottle and a carton upto the bedroom or wherever you feed her, then when needed open the carton, pour in and feed baby.

cratchit · 29/01/2006 18:44

Thank you. He doesn't take the whole carton yet though! So what about the leftover formula. Clearly I'll put it into bottle and leave in the fridge ideally, but other than that how long can it stay out of the fridge and how long can I carry it round in a cool bag?
I'd hoped there'd be a website somewhere with a nice easy peesy table that I could print off and stick on the fridge. kellymom for eg has a great ebm table that just says x hours for this, y hours for that.

i have the book 'what to expect- the first year' and they say that after 5 months, possibly earlier, can't remember, you don't need to sterilize the bottles, just wash them really well. i wash mine separately from normal washing up then put a bit of hot boiled water from kettle in and give them a shake. viola! Babe has never been ill, just make sure you check all crevices for old milk.
it takes forever with sterilizing.

ShaysMummy · 29/01/2006 18:55

i stopped sterilizing quite early as ds1 likes to chew dogs head!! dog loves it and lets him do it!!! nightmare!!

hunkermunker · 29/01/2006 23:43

Then don't use ready-made - use powder. You can use boiled water and just add the powder and shake up when you need it.

tiktok · 30/01/2006 11:58

Phone the manufacturers - they all have tel nos. on the packet.

me23 · 30/01/2006 12:12

once its out of the fridge it needs to be used within the hour.
as for the cool bag, if you put the bottle in it straight from the fridge then normally it will stay ok for up to four hours. I've got a avent therma bag and it states four hours on that.
hope this helps.

scotlou · 30/01/2006 12:22

Once you've sterilised the bottles, put the teat and top back on - then it's perfectly sterile for use until you need it - so you can keep a sterile bottle and a carton upstairs ready for use.
Once the carton is opened, treat it just like you would fresh milk - ie must be refrigerated.

cratchit · 30/01/2006 13:15

I now feel I've got a working rule of thumb and if I'm not sure I'll do as TikTok suggests.

ME23 mine's an Avent one too but I lost all the
bumph, so that's the perfect answer thankyou!

I do understand about not needing necessarily to sterilise and have read many of the threads on Mumsnet debating the issue, but am keen to start off sterilising as DS has been quite poorly and sicky with his tummy had major problems when he was born, so am just sticking on the safe side while I introduce something new.

Many thanks to all - I really appreciate it.

If you are gonig out, buy the 9oz cartons, the little one and pour the whole lot in teh bottle. Agree you don't need to sterilise at this age.

If at home, just pour ito the bottle from teh fridge and put carton back.

Hmm, I'm struggling to see the issue here!

GDG · 30/01/2006 13:19

Oops, sorry, just read your last post

JennyLee · 30/01/2006 13:35

My health visitor...well she said that any milk can be outside the fridge for up to 50 minutes and then needs chucked

hunkermunker · 30/01/2006 17:34

Any milk, JL? Breastmilk can be at room temperature a lot longer than that - 8 hours iirc (can check). Formula should only be kept out an hour then chucked though, I think.

JennyLee · 30/01/2006 17:55

was not thinking about breast milk I meant any cows milk sorry, really 8 hrs ? didnt know that that incredible

teacups · 30/01/2006 19:24

One post suggested keeping the powder and water separate to avoid the problem. You can buy (from Jo jo maman bebe definitely but probably elsewhere too) a dispenser which holds the right amount of powder for 3 feeds in 3 separate compartments. This means you could have the boiled water in your bottles and just add the powder when you need it. This would solve the carton problem too.

Hope this helps

mears · 30/01/2006 19:43

cratchit - I am sorry to ask this but i just feel I need to know. Why do you want to give yourself all this hassle?
