Thrush - getting through treatment

Looking for some advice on how to get through the next few days...

Long story short, my 3 week old had tongue tie (which has now been snipped), however the trauma of feeding her with TT has left me with thrush in my breasts.

Now feeding her is more painful than with the TT to the point where I can't cope...

What do I do? Ive tried to express but not producing enough to satisfy her? Do I continue to pursue this or try to mix her feeds with formula?

My concerns are that I want to go back to BFing after I'm treated.

Also any tips for dealing with thrush much appreciated, currently on metronidazole for me and Nystan for dd.

Thrush can be acutely painful and it's good that you are both being treated.

Are you surethat you've been prescribed metronidazole (brand name Flagyl)? If so, I'm a bit baffled - it's an antibiotic, not an antifungal drug and would therefore aggravate a case of thrush rather than treat it.

I's suggest having a look at the information here about thrush treatment: if you've been prescribed something different it may be appropriate to show this to your GP.

Glad to hear it! It's still worth looking at the BfN information - Kellymom also has some good suggestions about herbal medicines that can help recovery from a thrush infection.

I feel so sorry for you. Thrush is extrememly painful & can leave you dreading every feed. I had deep rooted thrush on my first dc and through pure ignorance thinking it was 'normal' pain kept feeding through it (whilst constantly crying and feeling so guilty thinking I wasn't breatfeeding correctly). I tried loads of creams, washed breast pads in boiling water, changed regularly etc but the only thing that worked for me was a 28 day course of 50 mg (I think) of diflucan. I started the treatment around week 7 of feeding and within 2 days, bf finally became enjoyable. Now have 2 wk old ds and thankfully no problems. Speak to ur bf consellor if you are going to a bf group. Use lactation consultant at your hospital if they have one.

I wouldn't wish thrush on anyone. Hope you get it resolved quickly & you can continue to enjoy breastfeeding.

I had bad thrush twice, it is very hard but will get better. I got through by taking a mixture of paracetamol and ibuprofen, the ibuprofen in particular really helped to ease the pain. Hope things start to improve for you soon.
