I just had to throw out over a pint of frozen breast milk

I have already defrosted 4 bags and each time it was soapy-tasting Sad. Tried to get ds2 to take it, but no doing. He's just not having any of it. It's so depressing, I remember all the middle of the night pumping sessions and thinking it was all worth it and as I'd have plenty of expressed to give him when he took a bottle Sad !!

It's feels like throwing out gold dust doesn't it

Do you know about excess lipase, it's still safe for baby to drink but you will need to scald any new express milk if he woun't drink it.

Oh that is sad. Sad. How depressing.

That's so interesting mig I've often thrown away milk because of the soapy smell and I could never get my first 2 to take expressed milk from a bottle so gave up, Dd is very happy to take a bottle so far but will remember this. I'm always really paranoid about expressed milk being off.

OP you have my sympathy.

metalelephant · 28/02/2012 18:04

Oh lookout, what a shame... Perhaps you can add it to your baby's food when you start solids? Don't throw it away yet.

Mine doesn't take a bottle at all, so I decided that the "wasted" breast milk had still been expressed for a reason: to encourage my supply. That has helped a bit!

Have a nice relaxed evening, hope tomorrow is a bit more fun! Wink

Gutted for you :(

scrivette · 28/02/2012 18:32

Oh what a shame, it's bad enough having to throw a tiny bit away. Sad

lookout · 28/02/2012 19:52

Thanks all for the sympathy. I am slowly coming to terms with the loss.

Mig, yes I have heard about the whole saponification thing. When I realised this batch was soapy I did an MN search and lo and behold, a message I had posted 7 years ago with my first came up! I remember now that my frozen breast milk went soapy then too, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's happened this time - just I'd forgotten.

metal it was too soapy even to use in cooking. It literally tasted like you'd rubbed a bar of soap on your tongue . No wonder he didn't want to drink it Grin. It does give me hope that he might take a bottle of freshly expressed though. I am deluding myself hoping that the bottle refusal was all down to the rank tasting milk!

I have loads in the freezer, I have weaned my son and it's mostly past the 6m old point now anyway, but I can't bear to chuck it. ridiculous of me I know!
